Obituary of Marietta Jones

Marietta Irene Annas Jones, 88, of Scotia, passed away peacefully in her home on January 7, 2016 surrounded by loved ones. She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Dr. Melvin D Jones; parents Percy D Annas and Mary Lou Sullivan Annas; brother Charles Annas and sister Peggy Wallace. Marietta is survived by sister Wanda Baker and brother Wesley Annas, daughter Leslie Buhrmaster and son- in- law John Buhrmaster, grandchildren Jennifer, Amanda and David, as well as a number of much loved nieces and nephews. Marietta is remembered as a loving Wife, Mother, Sister, Aunt and "Nana". Marietta was born in Granite Falls, North Carolina on April 21, 1927. After finishing high school, she moved to Clifton Park to live with her Aunt and Uncle: James and Myrtle Annas Messina, who she cared for in their later years. After graduating from Mildred Elly business school, Marietta worked as office manager and later designer for architect Guiles Vanderbogert, in Schenectady. After relocating to Vestal with her husband, Marietta spent her most active years as an avid volunteer in Broome County. Over the course of those years she served as President of a number of organizations including: The Broome County Medical Auxiliary, The Girls Club of Western Broome (later Girls Inc.) ,and the Indian Hills Girl Scout Council. In addition to these local organizations, she served on the national board of Girls Clubs of America, the national council of Girl Scouts of America, and as President of the New York State chapter of the American Lung Association. During her years with the Lung Association, she is especially noted for her work toward passage of New York's Clean Indoor Air Act. Upon moving to Scotia in 2005, Marietta became active in Scotia United Methodist Church where she found support and many friends. The family wishes to thank all the wonderful caregivers and friends who have supported Marietta over the last few years and allowed her to remain in her home. Special thanks to her most recent staff: Debbie , Betty, Sandra, Nicole, Veronica and Shelly for providing excellent care, and to Jan and Durr Vining of Vestal, and Estella Holmes of Clifton Park for their steadfast friendship over the years. Calling Hours will be held on Sunday January 17, 2016 from 4pm to 6pm at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd. Glenville. Funeral services will be held on Monday January 18, 2016 at 11am at the Scotia United Methodist Church, 201 North Ten Broeck Street Scotia, New York. Interment will take place on Thursday January 21, 2016 at 2:00pm at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd, Schuylerville, NY. Those wishing to process to the cemetery please meet at the funeral home by 12:45pm.
