Obituary of Margaret Stedman Cashman

Margaret Stedman Cashman died Nov. 19, 2018, surrounded by family. She was 95. She was born March 24, 1923, in the Wakefield, RI, home of her parents, William P. and Caroline H. Stedman. She graduated from South Kingston High School and worked in her early years as a secretary at the University of Rhode Island, where she met her husband, the late Thomas J. Cashman Jr. The two were joined June 16, 1947, at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Wakefield, and were happily married for 59 years. Margaret and her husband settled in Glenville in the 1950s, and raised a family of five children. During the ‘60s and ‘70s she worked part-time as a secretary in the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake school system, and for 25 years proudly served as a volunteer at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady. For a short while she also worked as a secretary at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. In addition to serving as president of the Burnt Hills Parent Teacher Association, Margaret also was a Girl Scout troop leader. Both she and her husband were active parishioners with the church, as well, where she was a member of the Rosary Altar Society. She enjoyed vacationing with family during summers in the Adirondacks, skiing, golfing and yoga, and in her later years traveled extensively with family and friends, touring Ireland, the Caribbean, France, Italy, Hawaii and the American Southwest.

She is survived and deeply missed by her sister, Marie Blessing; five children: Peggy Cashman; Anne (Douglas) Miller; Thomas (Candace) Cashman; Joan (Andrew) Jamieson; Mary Ellen (Thomas) Deromedi; six grandchildren: Jason Miller; Brett (Marcy) Miller; Caroline Cashman; Sarah (Bo) Zaks; Alicia (Manie) Van Der Schijff; Cara Deromedi; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Margaret will be celebrated at 9 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 24, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Saratoga Road, Glenville. She will be interred at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna. For those who wish, contributions can be made to Church of the Immaculate Conception Pastoral Care Ministry.

In a remembrance for her children, she once recalled her honeymoon at Franconia Notch, New Hampshire. “We saw the Old Man of the Mountain,” she remembered, “which has since crumbled away.” Love and memories stand forever.
