Obituary of Nina Driscoll

Nina Driscoll (Mashuta) was born in New London, Connecticut on March 15,1923 to Michael Mashuta and Alexandra Jurziewz. She passed peacefully surrounded by family on January 4, 2019. She is survived by her daughter Tina Massa (Edmond), and her grandchildren Michael Massa, David Massa, and Gina Alteri, and her cherished great grandchildren, Sienna and Samuel Alteri. She is also survived by her nieces, nephews, and cousins, including Lourdes and John Mashuta, Mark Mashuta, Alexis Sellens.

She was pre-deceased by her husband William Lee Driscoll, and daughters Polly Nickels (Raymond), and Mary Elizabeth Driscoll. She was also pre-deceased by her brother Stephen Mashuta and his wife Olga Mashuta, by her brother John Mashuta and his wife Genevieve.

Nina was raised in Schenectady New York. After she graduated from Nott Terrance High School, Nina was employed as a secretary in the Transmitter Department of GE. She married William Lee Driscoll, a World War II veteran, and became a single mother at the age of 36 when he died. She raised her three girls with love and strength in her “little red house” in Rexford. She knew and loved her neighbors and developed many generational friendships.

In later years she was employed as a Unit Secretary in the Ellis Hospital Emergency Room, where she also made many lasting friendships. She took great joy in her work and co-workers, who she maintained contact with until her last days. They showered her with love during her last stay at the hospital, during many poignant and joyful visits.

Nina treasured her family and had frequent contact with her grown grandchildren and little great-grandchildren, who named her “Great Ma”. She was a beacon of love and demonstrated her faith in God on a daily basis.

Nina is remembered for her “cards”, which she sent to everyone she knew and loved, marking momentous occasions in their lives. Her greatest joy was sending out her annual Christmas cards. Until her last days she read three newspapers a day including her favorite, The New York Post, while enjoying her coffee at her special chair. She loved her beautiful yard, and spent hours looking out and admiring the abundant wildlife. She also shared her love of the New York Yankees with her family and friends. Simple local outings gave her great joy.
