Obituary of Lewis Denton

Lewis Eugene Denton, 86, of East Glenville, died peacefully Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Glendale Nursing Home after a courageous 16 month battle with cancer. Born on September 15, 1926 in Schenectady, he graduated from Mont Pleasant High School. He was the son of Harold and Edna Denton. He served in the Pacific during WWII with the US Navy Seabees 90th Battalion in Iwo Jima and Guam, was a Life Member of Sampson WWII Navy Veterans, a past member of the NYS National Guard Co. E. and a member of Post 4660 V.F.W. Mayfair, Glenville Barracks. He was an electrician for the General Electric Company for 43 years in the large Steam Turbine Division. Lewis was an active member of the community, serving in the East Glenville Fire Department for over fifty years (beginning in 1961), chief of the department for three years and life member. Lewis was also a member of the New York State Fire Chiefs Association and past member of the Schenectady County EMS Council. He served on the Board of Directors for the Galway Lake Camper's Association for over 20 years. He started the East Glenville Community Church senior group, "The Pairs and Spares" where he was a member. In his later years, he was a member of the Saratoga Chapel and served his Lord there. He and his wife, Doris spent many wonderful years at their camp on Galway Lake, enjoying fishing, swimming, sailboat racing, and gardening. Through the years, Lewis also enjoyed roller skating, hunting, stamp collecting, coin collecting, bowling, and talking with neighbors in Glenville and Galway. Whether at church, camp or at home, Lewis could always be found lending a helping hand to family, neighbors and friends. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother Arthur Denton. Lewis was the loving and caring husband to his wife, Doris (Rolfe) Denton for sixty-five years, whom he met roller skating at the Paradise Roller Rink in Schenectady. Besides his wife he is also survived by one daughter, Janet (David) Kautzmann of Glenville and three grandchildren, Steven (Kristy) Kautzmann of Everett Washington, Rebekah (Christopher) Mancuso of Glenville, Timothy (Laurel) Kautzmann of Wormleysburg Pennsylvania, one great granddaughter, Abigail Mancuso, and nieces and a nephew. The family would like to thank Dr. Stewart Silvers and his staff at NYOH for their expertise and also the staff of Glendale Home for their kindness and care during Lewis' last two months. Friends and family are invited to call at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, East Glenville, on Friday, May 10th from 5 -8PM. A Memorial Service will be held at Saratoga Chapel, 359 East Line Road, Ballston Lake, New York on Saturday at 9:00 AM followed by burial in Vale Cemetery, Schenectady.
