Obituary of Alfred W. Cooper Sr.

Alfred William Cooper, Sr., was born 8/5/1926 at Scotia, NY. He was the son of Howard and Sara Cooper (nee Van Epps) of Scotia. Brother to Marguerite Cooper Bates (deceased). Alfred, graduated from Scotia High in 1944, where he starred on the varsity basketball team. After high school he coached and played on the Scotia Barons semi-pro basketball team that won the Schenectady City Championship in 1946. On October 4, 1947, married Mary Riordan of Scotia at St. Joseph's church. Married for over 50 years until Mary passed away in 2006. Hired by General Electrical as a tool designer in 1944 and continued to work there for 42 years as a Drafting designer in Medium Induction, then Design Leader in Large Motor and Navy Motor Design. Senior Lead Designer in Motor Redesign Dept until retiring in June 1987. In September 1987, he was hired by GE Medical Systems to design the new Magnetic Resonance Therapy machine. This work continued for 10 years until retirement in 1997. Survived by 4 children, Al Cooper, Jr (Linda) of Fairfax, VA; Norm Cooper (Patty) of Galax, VA; Diane Kurowski of Ballston Lake, NY and Jim Cooper (Lisa) of Carthage, NY. Also survived by 8 grand children, Terri Cooper-Hryckowian (Walter) of Clifton Park, NY, Erin Cooper of Melrose, NY and Lindsay Cooper of Marshall, VA; Brooke Miller (Bill) of Williamstown, PA, Joel Kurowski of Glenville, NY, Katie Kurowski (Tom) of Broadalbin, NY; Gabe Cooper of Richmond, VA and Nolan Cooper of Carthage, NY. 2 grandchildren, Sam Kurowski and Ryan Cooper predeceased their grandfather. 10 great grand children survive. Alfred was an avid fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team until their move to LA, after which he switched loyalty to the NY Mets. Also a fan of the New York Football Giants, Knicks and Rangers. Avid Bowler for many years at Burnt Hills Lanes. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Al Cooper, Sr's name to: The Community Hospice Foundation 310 S. Manning Blvd. Albany, NY 12208, 518-482-4433. Funeral service will be held privately for family and close friends. Interment will take place at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
