To the Family and Friends of Durward Kelton… I'm quite sure that Durward wouldn't have remembered me. I was a farmhand back in I think 1946 when Durward was a test milker at Walhalla Farms working for Harold Magnussen, the herdsman. I needed farm practice so I could qualify for entrance into the veterinary college at Cornell. He was just recently out of the Army. We knew that Durward was a combat veteran from the European War and had a distinguished war record. I did not know he was purple heart holder with a battlefield promotion to Captain. The single most vivid memory I have was Durward's brand new Nash sedan that he had bought I presume using some of his discharge money. He used to pile me and the other young farmhands at Walhalla into his prized Nash and we would take rides around Rexford and especially on Riverview Road by the the farm fields of Vischer's Ferry some 65 years ago. I returned to this area some years ago after service as a veterinarian in Korea. Cambodia and the USDA lab in Ames, Iowa. I had no idea that Durward (we used that name rather than Woody) had returned to this area. Please accept my sincerest sympathies in your loss. I have always retained good memories of Durward and our time at Walhalla so many years ago. Jim Gourlay gourlay@nycap.rr.com
