James Sutton Pennington III, 79, passed with the love of his faith and family on August 6, 2020. Born in Chicago, Illinois, to the late James Sutton and Eleanor (Wetten) Pennington II.  He attended New Trier High School in Winnetka, IL, and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. During his time in college, he met his wife, Jennie Ruth Collis.

After college, James began his dedicated career with General Electric as a Sales Engineer in Processs Computers. James and Jennie traveled the country with General Electric before they planted their roots in Schenectady, NY where they raised their family. They shared 50 cherished years together before Jennie passed away.

The most important thing in James’ life was his family. He adored his daughter, “Ellie” and grandchildren, whom called him “Buppa”.

James was a devoted Christian Scientist, and served many times as 1st Reader, as well as an active member of his Church. He was very passionate about reading and was proud to be a “Reader”, everything he did had research and great thought behind it. Through his study of Christian Science, he met his beloved wife, Elaine.

In his spare time, he enjoyed being outdoors. As a young boy and throughout his adult life his family had a retreat on Mamie Lake in Wisconsin, it was his favorite place. James would sing and listen to music whenever given a chance, his family remembers James singing hymns and telling the history behind each hymn.

Predeceased by his wife, Jennie and brother, Hugh Pennington.

To continue James’ legacy is his wife, Elaine; beloved daughter, Eleanor “Ellie” Colby, cherished son-in-law, Bryce Colby; adored grandchildren, Brennan, Bryan and Katrina Colby; brother, Stuart (Mary) Pennington, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was a giving man, who often donated to various charities and causes. When deciding where memorial contributions should go, James’ family remembers how much he loved animals, especially dogs. Memorial donations in James’ name may be made to the Animal Protective Foundation, 53 Maple Ave, Schenectady, NY 12302.

At the convenience of the family, a celebration of James’ life will be held privately. Online condolences are welcomed here onglenvillefuneralhome.com
