Obituary of Matthew McDonald Jr.

Matthew McDonald Jr., 88, passed peacefully at home on December 13, 2020. Born in Schenectady, NY, to the late Matthew and Mabel (Howenstein) McDonald Sr. A 1950 graduate from Mont Pleasant High School, he proudly served in the United States Navy. 

On April 11, 1953 he married his beloved wife of 68 years, the former, Dorothy Ann DeSimone. Together they raised their 3 sons in the home they built in Scotia, NY.

Matthew began working for Merriman Engraving Company. He retired from the Times Union as a Photo Engraver at 62. 

As a lifelong resident of Scotia, Matthew was an active member of his community. For many years he was a volunteer fireman at Thomas Corners Fire Department. In his spare time, Matthew enjoyed bowling, fresh water fishing, and golfing; he was a member of Hidden Pond for over 30 years. 

Predeceased by his sister, Florence Kniskern and his brother, Kenneth McDonald. 

To continue his memory is his loving wife, Dorothy McDonald; children, Matthew (Melanie) McDonald III, Mark (Lorinda) McDonald and Howard (Julie) McDonald; grandchildren, Maylee Bowers (Brad), Sara O’Brien (Nate), James McDonald (Kristin), Devin McDonald (Becca), Lauren Ciullo (Paul), and Kendra McDonald; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Brielle, Aaron, Ethan, Abigail, and A.J. 

Calling hours will be held at Glenville Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 16th from 11 to 12 PM. Funeral Service will begin at 12 PM officiated by Father Jerome Gingras. Burial will follow at Schenectady Memorial Park with Navy honors.

The McDonald family thanks the Holiday at the Atrium, Dr. Pezzulo, Nurse Stacy and Community Hospice for their support.
