Obituary of Fredrick E. Smith

Fredrick E. Smith, longtime Scotia, NY and Tampa, Fla resident, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2021 after a long illness.

Born in Schenectady on June 4, 1931, Fred was the son of Sahler and Florence Smith.  Fred attended Schenectady City Schools, Cortland College, and served in the armed forces. After marrying Carolyn Rapant, Fred followed his love of athletics, coaching basketball, football and baseball at Schalmont High School, and playing semi-pro baseball for the Homer braves and "Krals".   Fred continued his career at various school districts in NYS with responsibilities as principal, athletic director, business administrator, and finished his career at the NYS Education dept. in Albany.   During that time, Fred earned a Masters Degree at SUNY Albany while continuing to referee basketball in Schenectady, including sectional games held at Linton HS.  Fred maintained his many friendships in the sports arena with local coaches and players, many of whom were lifelong friends from childhood.  Shortly before his retirement from NYS education, Fred married Jeanne Radliff Smith in 1982 and remained with her until her passing in 2018.  Fred also served as a Deacon in the Newport Richey Catholic Church, and supported his communities in the NYS Capital District and Tampa, managing both golf and bowling leagues, including the annual "Fred Smith" golf tournament.   Whether it was on the court, or enjoying a round of golf, Fred was an avid competitor and always gave 110% , encouraging his teammates with seemingly endless energy!

Survivors include his children: Daniel (Sandy) Smith, Jeffrey (Julie) Smith, Susan Mosher, and Jack (Liz) Smith. Grandchildren: Ryan (Christina) and Sean Smith, Katie Smith, Nicholas Esposito, Jordan (Nicole) and Jacob Smith, and great grandchild Emily Michelle Smith, and stepchildren David (Nancy) and Larry Radliff (Debbie).  Fred maintained close friendships with an endless list of friends and relatives across NYS and Florida!
