I realize I might be too late to comment, but when I heard about Pete I had to write something. My trio "Peter, Paul & George" first met Pete at Hamilton Elementary School in a traditional dance and music residency. We were instantly impressed and enamored of Pete as a teacher and role model. Here was this big muscular man dancing with us, encouraging all of the students, especially the boys to join in. The way that he broke through all of the barriers of race and class was so heartening to us. We continued to work with him at Southgate Elementary for many years and even a couple of public dances in Schenevus and Rexford. We are heartbroken to lose such a treasure who brought joy and inspiration to young people especially. To all of of Pete's family we extend our deepest sympathie

I met Coach in August 1997 when we started our teaching career at North Colonie. He was an outstanding teacher, coach, colleague and person. His positivity was infectious, his commitment to perfect his craft was admirable, his passion for coaching was inspiring and his strength of character, integrity and compassion was immeasurable. He will be greatly missed by all. His legacy will endure with his family, his friends, his students, his team players, his colleagues and all who were blessed to know Coach. May God bless Coach.

I was lucky enough to experience coach Mravlja as a kid and as a parent. He was brand new when I had him and he made physical education, even for a kid who hated exercise, so much fun. My son started kindergarten in 2017 and was so shy but every day he would fist bump and high five and make jokes with coach. Before Covid, he had phys Ed almost every day and it was his favorite thing. Coach had a way of getting kids out of their shell. He is very missed. His family is in our thoughts.

My son is a 6th grader at Southgate and my daughter a 2nd grader. We felt such a deep loss to hear of Coach Mravlja’s passing. Coach had an amazing spirit. He wasn’t looking for the kids to be the fastest runners, the highest jumpers or the best kickers. He wanted them to show kindness to their classmates, to give their best effort, learn sportsmanship and most of all have fun. There are certain songs we hear in the car that we always say “Oh, this is a Coach song, turn it up loud like he would”. He will be missed tremendously by all of Southgate, both current and former students and staff. Our prayers go out to your family and we will always remember the confidence that Coach Mravlja instilled in our kids.

Where do I even begin? It's been 15-20 years since he was my coach at Southgate Both Coaches called me Smiley and always knew how to push me to be the best me. I ran into Coach 2 or so years back he had seen me driving and followed me into the gas station parking lot to call me my nickname and give me a big hug and he was proud of me. He jumped back in his truck and off he went off he went! Coach you were taken way way to soon. My condolences to his wife family at this horrible time!

I attended Southgate K-6th more than 20 years ago and remember Coach Mravlja very fondly. I even played soccer for him in high school when he briefly coached the girl’s team. He made my PE experience in elementary school the best! I remember in second or third grade filling out an “about me” and writing him down as my favorite teacher. He always called me by my last name — I can still hear him yelling at me as if I’m still on the field. He was a tough coach as he always wanted to make you better. But man was he also hilarious. My heart goes out to his family as it’s truly a great loss.

I am saddened to hear of the sudden loss of Coach Mravlja.
I worked at Southgate as an Educational Aide for 5 years and would bring students I assisted into his PE Class. I remember when I first walked in I said to my student, "it's time for Gym." Coach heard me and said, " It is not called Gym, it is called PE,Physical Education." To this day I have never forgotten that and I haven't said Gym again when referring to the class.
My prayers and thoughts are with his family and friends as they go through this emotional time.

For the Padres, Pete was our Captian, our friend, and our Coach. To me personally, someone I looked up to as a Youth Baseball Coach, who taught me a lot about Coaching travel ball. Pete and I had the opportunity to Coach 12u rec. together one season, what a pleasure it was to work with him in that regard. He helped my son with his catching, and I got to see what a talent Zach is first hand. Coaching with him was one of many things things I'll cherish forever. Pete was a great friend, who is loved by my whole family, we will miss him dearly.

Always the consumate professional he wanted to be the best.
