Obituary of Elizabeth Ackerley

Elizabeth Jane 'Betty' Ackerley GlenvilleElizabeth Jane Betty Ackerley, 90, of Cedar La., passed away peacefully on August 3, 2013 at Ellis Hospital with her family at her side. Betty was born on January 30, 1923 in Watertown, NY, daughter of the late Earl and Katherine Lenore Barker Dietrich. Betty earned a bachelors in arts degree from St. Lawrence University in 1944. She belonged to the French Club, and was reporter for her class of '44 newsletter to the present day. She excelled at sports, especially tennis, archery, and varsity cheerleading, and was president of her sorority, Pi Beta Phi. Betty moved to Schenectady following college and was employed as a secretary for GE. She then transferred to Queens, NY for her employment. Betty was reintroduced to Ronald Ackerley who she remembered in college through athletics, and the couple was married in Schenectady on August 28, 1965 at 1st Reformed Church. Ron and Betty moved from Tarrytown, NY to the Burnt Hills-Glenville area in 1979. Betty was a member of Burnt Hills United Methodist Church. Her beloved Ronald passed away November 4, 1998. Betty was very involved with the Scotia-Glenville Senior Center, and a member along with her close friends, at the Edison Country Club of Rexford. Betty was a former member and supporter of the Knollwood Country Club of Elmsford, NY, and the Annie Schaffer Seniors bowling league. Survivors include her two stepchildren, Robert E. Ackerley of Oak Hill, VA and Janet M. Ackerley (Anthony DeLorenzo) of Fort Salonga, NY; grandchildren, MaryBeth Augustine (Timothy) of Brewster, NY and Ronald Olszewski (Laura) of Thornwood, NY. Betty leaves behind her cherished great-grandchildren, Thomas, Jane, and Edward Olszewski, and Brynne and Rhiannon Augustine. She leaves behind her close circle of friends at the Edison Club as well. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 7, 11 a.m. at Burnt Hills United Methodist Church, 816 Saratoga Rd. (Route 50) in Burnt Hills, with its Pastor, Holly Nye, officiating. Callers will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd., Glenville. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, August 8th at 1 p.m. at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Tarrytown, NY under the direction of Glenville Funeral Home, Michael DeMarco, Director. Memorial contributions may be made in Betty Ackerley's name to the Westchester Golf Association Caddy Scholarship Fund, 49 Knollwood Road, Elmsford, NY 10523 (westchestergolf.org) or to the Animal Protective Foundation, 53 Maple Avenue Scotia, NY 12302 (animalprotective.org).
