Obituary of Myrtle M. Major

Dateline: Alplaus, NY

Myrtle M. Major, 83, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on July 29, 2021 at Saratoga Hospital. Born in Worcester, MA, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Martha (Beizo) McGrath. She was raised and educated in Schenectady and went on to continue her education at the Sawyer School and SUNY Albany. Myrtle met her beloved late husband Kendall I. Major Sr. in 1953 and they were married in the fall of 1955. Together the couple welcomed four beautiful children. Once the children were grown, Myrtle went to work as a School Bus Driver for Shenendehowa Central School District, retiring after 23 years. Myrtle was very active with the Civil Service Employees Association for many years and served as Unit President, Secretary and Local Secretary. Following retirement, Myrtle volunteered at the Glenville Senior Center where she was a tax consultant helping with tax forms for the elderly. She also was an active board member and editor of the Senior Center’s newsletter. Myrtle was also a Travel Consultant for Custom Travel Inc. in Clifton Park. Myrtle belonged to the Retired Public Employee Association along with the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Glenville. Myrtle served as the 2nd Vice President of the Retirees Local 924 of Schenectady and also served on the Region IV Political Action Committee along with the statewide Political Action Committee as a project staff and people recruiter. She also was active as a Secretary for the Women's Auxiliary of the Schenectady Yacht Club and belonged to the Alplaus Fire Department Women's Auxiliary. Myrtle was the Vice President for the Alplaus Resident Association and enjoyed volunteering for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Adopt an Angel Make a Wish Foundation and Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital. Above all, Myrtle enjoyed the time she was able to spend with her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Lelani Case, Tammy Dascoli, Marie Parks and Kendall I. Major Jr.. Many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents, Myrtle was predeceased by her husband Kendall I. Major Sr, canine companion Mojo and sisters Laurena Hamiln and Elaine McGrath.

Calling hours for Myrtle will be held on August 4, 2021 from 5-7pm at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, Glenville. A funeral service will follow at 7pm at the funeral home. Burial will take place privately at Schenectady Memorial Park.
