Obituary of Thomas H. Cornick

Thomas H. Cornick, 83, peacefully passed on August 13, 2021. Born in Gloversville, NY to late parents, Kenneth and Helen Cornick.  In 1956 Tom graduated from Gloversville High School where he was the Captain of the Football team. He went on to Middlebury College where he received his BA Degree and was also chosen to be Captain of their football team.  He later received his Master’s Degree from Syracuse University.

 

Thomas proudly served in the United States Army for 31 years. He entered the army in 1961 rising to the rank of Colonel.  He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. During his time in Vietnam he was awarded two Bronze Star Medals for heroism. In 1976, while serving with the Military Police, he was awarded The Meritorious Service Medal. He received numerous Letters of Citations for his outstanding work during his career.

 

He returned to NY and resided in Saratoga with his family. He retired from the Army in 1992. Proud of his Military experience, he accepted a position with the NYS Office of Children and Family Services, where he cultivated a program that helped juveniles learn through Military training. He then became a Youth Facility Director of this program located in South Kortright, NY and an Aftercare Program in Brooklyn, NY. Tom retired from NYS in 1998. 

 

In 1992, he met his wife of 25 years, the former Valerie Rasmussen. Together they created a happy home filled with countless memories. They enjoyed traveling, playing golf and buying and selling antiques. Tom loved spending time with his grandchildren and family and caring for his beloved dogs and cats.

 

Predeceased by his parents and brother Kenneth Cornick.

 

To continue his memory, is his loving wife of 25 years, Valerie; daughters, Caroline (Michael) Kompf of Baldwinsville NY, Michelle Herkenham of North Greenbush NY and Stephanie (Frank) Haera of Franklin, TN; grandchildren, Justin and Rick Kompf, Natalie and Thomas Herkenham, Nolan and Sydney Haera; as well as several nieces, nephews and his sister in law, Marlene Rasmussen.

 

The family would like to thank all of the staff of the Kingsway Community for their kindness and wonderful care in his final days. 

 

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 19th from 5 to 7 PM at the Glenville Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Services will be held on Friday, August 20th at 11 AM at the Glenville Funeral Home.  Full Military honors and burial will follow at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery at 12:30pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Protective Services Foundation, 53 Maple Ave, Schenectady, N.
