50 years ago this very summer there was a very good Little League baseball team who called home the poorly maintained sandlot behind Julia Ward Howe Elementary School. Skippered by Mr. Tattersall and Mr. Kazarsky, the team boasted 3 All-Stars from Abington Drive; flamethrowing hurler "Timmy" Kazarsky, center fielder "Stevie" Terhune, batting at a .532 clip, and team leader, perennial MVP, clean up hitter, and backstop extraordinaire "Johnnie" Tattersall.
My best friend still in Pittsburgh, Dave Carlson, shared with me this week the story of a 40 year bond Dave's cousin Laureen shared with her first love John, and the truly great husband, father, papa, and mentor he had become.
Faith and Family no doubt guided John in his life, and I wish to add a lifetime of excellence in sport, and a lifetime of excellence in the leadership and development of others, nurtured and grew in part from the hard scrabble, grass-less dirt field behind the walls of our ancient elementary school.
Tom, David, Amy, and Laureen, I am so sorry for your loss. May the Lord be with you and your family as you fight back tears, and celebrate the life of this wonderful man.
A Field of Dreams opened her gates for "Johnnie" on Saturday night, and the sweet sound of "Play Ball!" will forever fill our hearts.

Dede and send our condolences to Laureen and the entire Tattersall family. JT was the best man in my wedding to Dede. He and I were long time buddies through high school and college. I have great memories of our times in the youth group at Sunset Hills church, fast pitch softball games and hanging out together at each other’s homes. It was always a blessing and great fun to be around the Tattersall home.
