Obituary of Helen L. De Vere
Helen L. De Vere, 92, formerly of Scotia passed away peacefully on September 12, 2021. Born December 9, 1928 in Oneonta, NY to the late Gordon and Linda (Ormiston) Davidson.
In 1946, she graduated from Bethlehem Central High School in Delmar, NY. She was a 1950 graduate of Keuka College, receiving her BA in Sociology. Following graduation, Helen worked as a Social Worker for NYS Department of Mental Hygiene. In 1953, she married the late Robert De Vere and began raising a family. Throughout her life she was dedicated to her faith, she was a member of the Scotia Reformed Church and for many years she served as an elder.
Later in life she returned to the workforce as a Teacher Assistant for Scotia-Glenville School District. She retired after 15 years, her and husband “Bob” moved to Murrell’s Inlet, SC in 1989. Together they enjoyed their active senior lifestyle, Helen especially loved her water aerobics. Bob passed away in 2006.
Along with her devoted faith, Helen’s family was the most important element of her life. She relocated back to the Syracuse area to be closer with her children and grandchildren. Helen continued her active, enjoyable life within the Nottingham Senior Community in Syracuse; she was always a social butterfly! No matter where Helen went, she came back with a new friend.
Predeceased by her husband, Bob, and siblings, Robert Davidson and Janet Birk. To continue her memory are her children, Richard (Judy) De Vere, Diane De Vere, Susan (Robert) Marturano, Barbara (Mark) Suprise; grandchildren, Robert (Nicole) De Vere, Courtney (Kevin) Ford, Kaitlyn (Derek) Ottman, Emily (Alberto) Villegas, Gregory Marturano, Jessica (Tom) McIver, and Lindsey McIver; as well as 5 great-grandchildren, and another blessing on the way.
Funeral Services will be held at the Glenville Funeral Home on Thursday, September 16th at 11 AM, officiated by Rev. Jason White. Services will be live streamed on Glenville Funeral Home Facebook Page. A calling period will be held prior from 10 to 11 AM. Burial will follow services on Thursday at Park Cemetery in Scotia, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Nottingham Christmas Fund, 1301 Nottingham Road Jamesville, NY 13078 or Hospice of Central New York, 990 7th N St, Liverpool, NY 13088.
