Obituary of Walter A. Engel Jr.

Walter A. Engel Jr., 89, passed away peacefully at his home on October 8, 2021. Walter was born and raised in Amsterdam, NY, the loving son of Walter Sr. and Edith(Danham) Engel. Following graduation from Wilbur H. Lynch High School he served in the USAF as staff sergeant from '55-'60. Following his service he entered college through the G.I. bill and received his AAS degree.

Walter married Arlene on June 22, 1958 and raised his family in Glenville, moving there in 1959.  He and his beloved wife Arlene lived in the same home ever since.  Arlene passed away in 2003. From 1985-2000 Walter worked for Chris's Coffee Service in the vending business as a repair technician. Walter enjoyed raising Old English Sheepdogs, often two at a time for many years. Following his retirement he joined the Glenville Seniors and met friends for afternoon meals there and the coffee meetings at Burnt Hills Diner. In 1961 he purchased a new Volkswagen Beetle with a cloth sunroof!

He and Arlene kept it and till this day in great classic car condition. Walt also enjoyed going to car shows in the area. Walter was a proud American and member of the VFW.

He was blessed to have the company of both his sons every Sunday for dinner and help with chores.

He is survived by his devoted sons, Robert (Peggy Sue) Engel of W. Charlton and Douglas Engel of Galway; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Amy Engel.

Friends and relatives are invited to meet at the entrance of the Gerald Solomon National Cemetery at 9:45 am on Friday, October 15th. A procession to committal shelter one will take place with military honors bestowed at 10 am.
