Obituary of Carmella Joan Grandy

Carmella Joan Grandy, 87, peacefully passed away on November 18, 2021 surrounded by the love of her family. Born on St. Patrick’s Day in 1934, Carm’s outgoing personality was created at an early age. She was born and raised in Scotia, NY to parents Anthony and Angeline (Marino) Santoro. Her father tragically died when Carmella was young.

A Scotia-Glenville High School graduate, Carmella married the love of her life, Ernest Russell Grandy, in 1956; however, their love story began 73 years ago when Carm was only 14 years old.

Carm worked as a secretary at General Electric, The Daily Gazette and at Oswald D. Heck, but her most important job title was “Mom.” Later when her family grew, she was promoted to “Grandma”, her most treasured role. After being lifelong residents of Scotia, Carmella and Ernest moved to Saratoga to be closer to their grandchildren. In Saratoga, Carmella flourished. She loved being around her friends, socializing at events, playing tennis, going to the Saratoga Race Course and was a member of Saratoga Golf & Polo Club, and her favorite activity was shopping and spoiling her grandchildren.

Carmella was a beautiful person, inside and out. She not only took pride in her appearance, but the way she cared and listened to people will forever be what made an impression. Her family will remember Carmella’s fine taste in decor, the smile she had when she was with family and friends and how she never gave up through her courageous battle with dementia.

The Grandy family wishes to thank Carmella and Ernest’s neighbors, who lovingly looked out for them in their elder years, and to Home Instead and the Wesley Community for their care and compassion.

She was predeceased by her loving and caring mother, Angeline DiNicola and step-father Raymond. She is survived by her son, Gary (Ellen) Grandy; grandchildren, Alexander (Jennifer) Grandy, Matthew Grandy (Cody Yeackel), Zachary Grandy (Megan Shoults), William Grandy; as well as her cherished great-grandchild, Maeve Carmella Grandy; sisters, Elaine Carlin and Marian Gill; nephews, Anthony Mangino and Jim Gill and nieces, Adele Compton and Andrea Greene.

Calling hours will be held at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd. on Tuesday, November 23rd from 4 to 7 PM. A Celebration of Life Service at the Glenville Funeral Home will begin on Wednesday, November 24th at 11 AM, followed by burial at St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
