Obituary of Joan M. Holzhauer

Joan M. Holzhauer, 92, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on November 22, 2021 at Ellis Hospital. Born in Schenectady, NY, Joan was the daughter of Daniel and Margaret (Bounds) Kelleher. 

 

A graduate of Nott Terrace High School in Schenectady, St. Peter’s School of Nursing, and St. Joseph’s College; Joan worked as a Registered Nurse at the former St. Clare’s Hospital in Schenectady before her retirement in 1992. Joan was a parishioner of the Immaculate Conception Church in Glenville and a member of their Rosary Society and Our Lady Queen of Peace Prayer group. She volunteered for the Immaculate Conception Pastoral Care Ministry, visiting the homebound and bringing the Eucharist to patients at Ellis and Sunnyview Hospital.

 

Devoted to the sanctity of all human life from conception to death, Joan served for many years as the Volunteer Director of Birthright Crisis Pregnancy Center in Schenectady. She was an active member of the St. Peter’s alumni association and the Registered Nurse’s Club in Schenectady, she also enjoyed her time with the ladies from the Red Hat Society.

 

Besides her parents, Joan is predeceased by her beloved husband, Charles Holzhauer (2011); brothers, Daniel Kelleher and William Kelleher; and sister, Mary Kelly.

 

She is survived by her loving children, James Holzhauer of Clifton Park, John (Patricia) Holzhauer of Ballston Lake, and Daniel F.(Deborah) Holzhauer of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake. She is also survived by her 5 cherished grandchildren, Katie (Thomas) Afinowicz, Amy (Thomas) Thackeray, Daniel Holzhauer Jr., Kyle (Nicole) Holzhauer and Nicholas Holzhauer; 7 treasured great-grandchildren: Eli, Jack, Natalie and Carly Afinowicz, Anna Pearl and Lyla Joan Thackeray, and Aspen Chan Holzhauer. Also surviving, her sibling, Marjorie (Jerry) Shea of NYC, as well as several nieces and nephews. 

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Church of Immaculate Conception on Wednesday, December 1st at 10 AM. Mass will be livestreamed at icglenville.com

Interment at St. Anthony’s Cemetery will follow Mass.

 

Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd. on Tuesday, November 30th from 6 to 8 PM
