Goodbye Dad. Though our relationship was complicated and we didn’t always get along, I am grateful to have known you and am beyond grateful for the lessons you taught by example: the importance of fairness, hard work, loyalty; a love of nature, music, reading, art and family.
I am also indebted to you for being a feminist and never expecting less of your daughters than you did of your sons, for teaching me the importance of humor and a well-cut suit, as well as how to stand up for myself.
Finally, I will miss our many outdoor adventures (rock scrambling in the Gunks, hiking in Zion, canoeing in Montana) and our “father-daughter bonding days” in NYC, which were as likely to find us sneaking across the closed-for-renovation catwalk in Grand Central as taking in the latest exhibit at MoMA or The Met.
You were a true original, and I am proud to have called you my Dad. I hope you’ve been reunited with Mom and are in the great blue beyond, enjoying a hike that never ends. #RIP
