I had just dropped my children off at church for Christmas pageant practice when Mary appeared in the church parking lot and said, "Psst...wouldn't your children love a puppy for Christmas?" Looking in her trunk at a bunch of adorable puppies, I weakened at her great sales pitch. Never one to make a quick decision, I took the whole box of puppies home, played with each one until I selected the runt. I got the rest back to Mary before the kids saw them. That puppy, Velvet (because she had fur like black velvet then) was a GREAT dog and I have Mary to thank for many years with this wonderful pet.
