Obituary of Jayne "Giovanna" McCann

Jayne “Giovanna” P. McCann, 99, of Rotterdam, NY, entered into eternal rest on May 1,2022 with her loving family around her. Born in Schenectady she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Maria “Mary” (Signore) Paparella. Jayne’s father died when she was five and a half years old, but her mother Mary was able to find a way to raise Jayne and her brothers and sisters working as a Chef at Union College and continued providing music lessons early in life for her family. Jayne met her first husband Frank Attanasio in high school orchestra, and both became members of the Schenectady Symphony Orchestra. She and Frank were married and moved to West Point where Frank was in the military academy. There they started their family and Jayne worked for the Post Exchange in the makeup department at West Point Military Academy. She had the honor of waiting on Mamie Eisenhower. Frank and Jayne had four children. When Frank’s service time was completed, the family moved back to the Schenectady area.

Jayne was an avid reader and she was a member of the Wiawaka Center for Women at Lake George. One of her greatest joys was playing the violin. She played in various orchestras such as the Schenectady Symphony Orchestra, Annie Shaffer, Union College, Glens Falls Symphony and the Clifton Park Senior Center. While at Glens Falls Orchestra, she became an elected officer of the Federation of Music local 506 and attended all the conventions which were held in Las Vegas. Jayne worked at SUNY Albany in the registrar’s office where she became good friends with and worked with Nereida Guthrie and Marcy Rose. She also loved playing the piano for her family and friends. Jayne enjoyed eating at her favorite restaurants Canalis, Top’s Diner and Bellevue Café. She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Schenectady. Jayne married her second husband the late Harvey McCann, together they shared many years until his passing in 1989. Above all Jayne’s greatest joy was spending time with her family. She enjoyed life to the fullest and always said “If I was younger again, I would set the world on fire!” Her love for family and friends will never be forgotten. Jayne left a lasting effect on all that knew her. We will miss you very much. She would want you all to know “God bless you and keep you until we meet again”.

Jayne is survived by her sons Frank Attanasio (Patricia) and Ronald Attanasio (Kathy Tepper). Also surviving are many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends along with Her Goddaughter and niece Patty Paparella.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by both her husband’s Frank Attanasio and Harvey McCann, her sons Alan Attanasio and Joseph Attanasio along with her brothers and sisters Louis, Mike, Frank, Marguerite and Helen.
