Dear Pat and Family: I just learned of your loss and I wanted share my sincere sympathy. I have wonderful memories of many great basketball games at the YMCA. Ross was such a gentleman and always wore a smile whenever we would meet. We had tremendous respect for him as an educator, coach, father and all around genuine man. May he rest in peace and may you all find comfort in knowing what a great man he was. God Bless. Dan and Kathy Riggins

Dear Pat and Family, we were so shocked and so very sad to hear about Ross. He and I shared the same retirement party in 1999 and over 20 years of teaching together at Scotia-Glenville High School. Everyone (and that is no exaggeration) loved being around him. Everything about him was good--he was funny, energetic, kind and caring, a wonderful and respected teacher, and a sympathetic friend and colleague. He touched the lives of all who knew him. We are so very sorry for your loss and regret that we were unable to be at the services and tell you in person how we feel. We will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers. With fond memories, Sue and Don Welch

I knew of Mr. MacKinnon from School, at least one or both of my siblings had him as their Chemistry teacher. We became more acquainted when he came in for his regular workouts at the YMCA. He would always start his routine on the eliptical trainer. I would here about his killer basketball team that he organized at the Y for a GREAT while and faintly recall him reviewing team stats as He rode the eliptical trainer. He retired from the BASKETBALL team intact!, then turned over the coordination to ? Mr.S? He was always friendly ,pleasant and a real gentleman in word and deed. I was shocked when I found out the news today. My Dad mentioned they were both volunteering for Habitat for Humanity the day before He died. He was in service to others up until the end. I was glad I had a chance to know him better through the YMCA. My sincere condolences, He will be missed. Sue Van Vorst

I remember my sophomore year of playing basketball for coach MacKinnon in 1978-79. We had lost our first six games and our starting center got two quick fouls in the 7th game when I subbed in against Guilderland. We went on to win that game 53-38. It felt great to contribute 20 points to that night, and start the rest of the year. Coach Mac believed in me and I remember thanking him for that more than once. This memory has forever stayed with me. Very sad to see him go. You can tell he was a nice man just by seeing his picture!

I too was fortunate to have Mr. MacKinnon. as my chemistry teacher. Chemistry wasn't my best subject but I gained so much from being in his class. Due to his enthusiasm I did my own experiments in my mom's kitchen just to see what would happen. He taught me to be detailed in my lab descriptions because through the details he would know what happened during the experiment. Over the years as I have worked with my own students I too have taught the importance of detail. To this day when I see a bright clear "Caribbean blue" I remember Mr. MacKinnon and the first lab report I wrote in chemistry. He was a great teacher whose reach went farther than he could have imagined.

I am a teacher in the Czech Republic, teaching psychology and history for almost 26 years. Ross was one of my greatest inspirations as an educator. He knew how to motivate young people and he was always excited about this job. I have tried to emulate that. Several of my own students have heard stories about "Mr MacKinnon" over the years. This is the joy of teaching. Those stories are now passed on to another generation - and he is eternally a part of young people. Thank you Ross for all you have done for so many. John

Patty, I have known Ross since 1954 when I moved to Westwood as a youngster, played baseball with him thru school and will always remember his first baseman's glove, a little different than the rest of our gloves. I looked forward, when you guys came for the class reunion. to play a little golf with him. His golf lessons improved his game and we just had a lot of fun, a few beers and dinner. I feel terrible for your loss and hope we will see you at the next get together. A Westwood Friend, GORDY, Ross, Hit um straight

I am heartbroken to hear about his passing, he was an awesome teacher. In 1972 as a freshman he taught earth science and then chemistry when I was a junior. I left scotia in 78 but when I came to visit family I always made sure I got to the high school to see and say hello to one of my favorite teachers. he made an imprint on my life and I will never forget walking into his classroom and he would be sitting on the edge of his desk. farewell Mr. McKinnon

Add me to the list of innumerable students who was blessed to have had Ross as a teacher. I had no intention of pursuing science in college, yet I took AP Chemistry as a senior along with Physics just because I wanted to be in his class. That year ('85) I was honored to have won the science department award in June, but the success I had in my classes had really nothing to do with my interest in or passion for them. When I returned for a visit during my freshman year in college, he told me that he had my file in his desk and was classifying me as one of those students who did well in science but didn't want to continue my education in it. He said they wanted to figure out what they could do to encourage more kids to pursue a science education. I remember telling him that it was never the science I loved. It was my teachers. He made chemistry interesting, fun and easy to learn and, because I respected his opinion of me so much, I pushed myself to do my best. He, along with Mr. Olson and Mr. Knapp didn't make me want to be a successful science student, but they did make me want to be the best student in my chosen field that I could be. He helped instill in me a passion for learning, for caring about my work, and for trying to be the kind of person other people wanted to be around - just like people loved to be around him. I was honored to be his student. I only wish I could have also been his friend as I got older because I know he still would have been the kind of person I loved to be around.
