Obituary of Norman F. Hopson

Norman F. Hopson, 98, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2022 at Ellis Hospital with his family at his side. Born in Massena, NY, he was the son of the late Elswood and Venita (McRobbie) Hopson. Norman was a 1942 graduate of Massena High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1943-1945. Following the service, he went on to continue his education from R.P.I. obtaining a master’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering. Norman married his beloved late wife Betty (MacMillan) Hopson in 1950. Together they shared 56 years of marriage until her passing in 2006.  He worked at General Electric as a Metallurgical Engineer, retiring after 34 years. Norman was a longtime brother of the Beukendall Masonic Lodge #915. He also was an active member of the Alplaus Volunteer Fire Department and the Alplaus United Methodist Church. Norman enjoyed playing music, boating on Lake George, and traveling around the world. He was very proud of his Scottish heritage and enjoyed doing genealogy. Above all, he cherished the time he was able to spend with his family.

Left to honor Norman are his daughters Catherine Cerza (Richard), Cynthia Handy (John) and Carol Kilby (Paul Irwin). His grandchildren Rachael Dawson (Brendan), Ben Cerza (Laura), Sarah Handy, Lisa Hardy (Joseph), Jill Price (Geoffrey) and Tanya Ryce (David). 10 great grandchildren along with several brother-in - laws, sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Betty Hopson and his sister Jean Chapin.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, September 11, 2022 from 11am-1pm at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, Glenville. A funeral service will follow at 1:30pm at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will be held on Monday, September 12, 2022 at 12pm at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. Those wishing to follow in procession please meet at the Glenville Funeral Home by 10:45am.
