Obituary of Anthony "Tony" Schietromo

Anthony (Tony) Schietromo of Glenville, entered into eternal life on September 15, 2022, after a brief illness. He was born in Amsterdam, NY on April 18, 1937, the son of Alfonso and Maria (Tambucci) Schietromo. Tony was a 1955 graduate of Lynch High School in Amsterdam. He married Susan M. (Mimi) Van Buren on June 21, 1958 and raised a family of five children in Tribes Hill and Mayfield. Early in their marriage he proudly served our country as an MP in the US Army. After his tour, Tony was employed as a carpentry apprentice and carpenter, including several years of service at Amsterdam Overhead Door Company. His love of woodworking, innovative mind and independent spirit led him to starting his own business as a master carpenter. Due to his health, he retired in his early forties. After his wife's passing in 1990, he turned to his Catholic faith and delved into volunteer work as bereavement minister, RCIA coordinator, eucharistic minister and faith formation member. Tony was a lover of the arts and coordinated many group trips to operas and musicals at the Met, Glimmerglass Opera and Opera Saratoga. He was a baseball enthusiast and rarely missed a Yankees game, many times "coaching" from his recliner. Throughout his life, his passion for continued learning inspired a variety of interests and hobbies, including avid reading on many subjects and enriching his love of his Italian heritage by taking Italian language lessons with his second wife Barbara. He enjoyed cooking delicious meals for family and friends. Many hours were spent around the family table, drinking homemade wine made with his son and sons in law. Spending time with his family was what brought him the most joy. Tony was predeceased by his parents, first wife Susan, siblings: Peter Schietromo, Richard Schietromo, Edith Ackerman, Patricia Bush, Violet Perry, Josephine Austin, Anna Spraker, and Antonetta Brown. He is survived by his wife of twelve years, Barbara Ann Edwardsen, children: Gina Benton (John Nellis), Peter Schietromo, Maria Andriano, Christina (Roger) Hildreth and Theresa Keehan (Randy Douglas), five grandchildren, four great grandchildren, brother Alfonso Schietromo, sister in law Olga Schietromo, many nieces and nephews. The following is an excerpt of notes hand written by Tony: "Farewell family and friends. I thank God for all of you. I thank Him for being by my side when I grieved over the loss of my beautiful wife of 32 years and for the honor of being her husband and father of our children, Gina, Peter, Maria, Christina and Theresa. I thank Him for bringing Barbara Ann Edwardsen and her family into my life and for giving me another chance to experience joy and fulfillment in my later years". Calling hour will be held Tuesday, September 20th at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, located at 400 Saratoga Road, Glenville. The funeral Mass, also at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, will commence at 11:00 a.m.. Rite of committal and burial will immediately follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Route 29, Johnstown.
