Obituary of Bernardo “Bernie” Canovas Jr.
Bernardo “Bernie” Canovas Jr., 80, passed away Tuesday, September 13th 2022 in Schenectady, New York after a long and hard-fought battle with multiple myeloma.
Born in New York City to the late Bernardo Sr. and Angelita (Gavila) Canovas, Bernie was a veteran of the United States Air Force. After his service he returned to New York City, where he worked as a yellow cab driver until he received a degree in Landscape Architecture from The City College of New York. Bernardo worked on a great variety of projects in the New York area as an architect and landscape architect, including work on Van Cortlandt Park, Randall's Island, and Flushing Meadows Park. He completed his architecture career at The Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY), from which he retired in 2004.
Bernie was a true student of life, and always enjoyed learning about anything and everything he encountered. He also enjoyed photography, bicycling, boating, and music, particularly jazz.
He is survived by sons Alexander of Brooklyn, NY and Nicholas of Somerville, MA; and sisters Mariana of Otis, MA and Angelita of New York, NY.
A private memorial service will be held with friends and family.
