Ernest Grandy

Obituary of Ernest R. Grandy

Ernest “Ernie” R. Grandy, 91, peacefully passed away at home with his son Gary by his side joining his beloved wife Carmella in eternal rest on September 29, 2022. Born on October 17, 1930 to his late parents, Ernest C. and Emma Mabel (McVeigh) Grandy.

A Scotia-Glenville High School graduate, he was raised in a different time when life moved slower, he saw the world advance before his eyes. After graduation, Ernie went to work briefly for General Electric in Schenectady before entering the newspaper business, working at Union Star before his long successful career with the Daily Gazette. Ernest was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War where he proudly served for a short period.

From 1954 to 1995, Ernie was a dedicated member of the Daily Gazette. Beginning as District Manager in the Amsterdam office, he was then promoted to Assistant Circulation Manager. His career continued to rapidly progress with promotions to Circulation Manager, Assistant General Manager and finally General Manager of the paper. Ernie was then promoted to the first non-family board member, as Secretary and Treasurer where he proudly served until 2011.

In 1956, Ernie married the love of his life, the former Carmella Santoro Dinicola. They met as teenagers and their love continued to grow after 73 years together. Together they raised their son, Gary, in Charlton. As a father, he was active throughout his son’s life and always made family a priority; Ernie volunteered for his son’s Cub Scouts, Little League as well the district’s Parent Teacher Association.

After being lifelong residents of Scotia, Carmella and Ernest moved to Saratoga to be closer to their grandchildren, who they loved with every ounce of their hearts. Ernie lovingly known as a “Grandpa” would take his grandkids to the movies every week, talked history and books, and fondly when the grandkids were older he took them golfing, it was their own boys club!

In his spare time, Ernie enjoyed boating on Saratoga Lake, fishing, golfing with his son and grandchildren, researching family history and was an avid Yankees fan!  Retiring at 65, Ernie got to enjoy 20 years of happy and warm memories when he and Carm would escape the cold New York winters to Clearwater Florida. He and Gary, took an unforgettable trip  to London in 1999 to research the Grandy family roots.

Like his wife’s elegant beauty and class, Ernie had the same charm and sharp-dressed appearance. His family humorously looks back on how Ernie always looked his best and was never seen in shorts or anything too casual. Besides his family, Ernie’s prized possessions were his collection of cars, which he kept in pristine condition. Over the years, the family counts  75 beautiful cars, all which have their own story to tell. Ernie will be remembered for his kindness, devotion to his family, his work ethic and appreciation for life.

The Grandy family wishes to thank Carmella and Ernest’s neighbors on Woods Edge Court who lovingly looked out for them in their elder years, and to Home Instead, Carey and Chris, Saratoga Hospice and especially the staff at Prestwick Chase, Amy, Kelly, Trina, Tammy and Kenny, for their care and compassion.

Predeceased by his beautiful wife, Carmella; and brother, James T. Grandy.

He is survived by his son, Gary (Ellen) Grandy; grandchildren, Alexander (Jennifer) Grandy, Matthew Grandy (Cody Yeackel), Zachary Grandy , William Grandy; as well as his cherished great-grandchildren, Maeve Carmella Grandy and Francis Peter “ Frankie” Grandy.
