Obituary of George H. Smith

George H. Smith “Smitty”, 92, of Glenville passed away on November 10, 2022 at Ellis Hospital.

 

Born on May 26, 1930, he was the son of the late Edwin A. Smith and Julia Grace (Thompson) Smith.

 

In 1947, George graduated from Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School. He worked for the Department of NYS Tax and Finance and later at the Department of Corrections. In 1951, he joined the G.E. Apprentice Program, graduated as a toolmaker at KAPL in 1956, and then transferred as a Draftsman.  George retired in 1990 as a Senior Bucket Designer. For 8 years, George proudly served in the Navy Reserves and was a member of the Thomas Corners Fire Department for 5 years.

 

George was united in marriage to the former, Mary H. Norwood, of Albany in 1954, they were married 49 years. Mary passed away in 2003.  

 

George and Mary were predeceased by their son Edwin In 1979. George is survived by his two loving daughters, Marcia L. Smith of Glenville and Karen A. Vickerson (Eric) of Niskayuna and their son, George T. Vickerson.

 

George was a NASCAR enthusiast and rode his cars on many racetracks. His Hobbies included traveling and taking pictures. George took great pleasure in driving his Corvette.  He was a member of the Saratoga Auto Museum.

 

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 17th, at 10 AM from the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd. Scotia-Glenville. Relatives and friends are invited to attend and may also call Wednesday November (Nov. 16) from 5 PM to 8 PM. 

 

Burial will be held at the Smith Family Plot at Chestnut Lawn Cemetery in Ravena. Contributions may be made in George’s name to the American Cancer Society of Upstate NY.  Online condolences may be expressed to the Smith Family at GLENVILLEFUNERALHOME.COM.
