Obituary of John R. Hughes

John R. Hughes, 89, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday evening, November 12, 2022. He was born October 7th, 1933 in Wilkes-Barre, PA to the late Raymond and Jane (Gardner) Hughes. He graduated from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA in 1956.

He was headhunted by G.E. and worked at the R&D Center in Niskayuna for over 40 years. John was involved in the development of many inventive patents for GE. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Parish in Glenville for over 50 years and a pillar of the church. John enjoyed watching all sports, especially baseball. He kept tabs on his alma mater sports team, the Lehigh Mountain Hawks! John had a passion for all the sciences and enjoyed sharing his knowledge. His greatest love was being around friends and family and spending time with them. John was predeceased by his wife of over 50 years and love of his life, Jean (Butz) Hughes.

John is survived by three daughters: Nancy (Michael) Woods, Janet (Dane) Woodworth and Barbara (Mark) Brubaker. John leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Jaclyn Woods, Dr. Matthew Woods, Alyssa Woodworth (Michael Allocco) and Evan Woodworth (Kennedy Jobin).

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 18th at 1 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 547 Saratoga Rd. Rev. Deron Milleville will officiate John’s funeral. Relatives and friends are welcome to attend and may also call Thursday, Nov. 17, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd. Scotia-Glenville. Masks will be required at the request of the family.

John’s family would like to thank the Glenville Fire Department first responders, and the Touching Hearts at Home Agency, especially his caregiver, Mary Hughes, for their excellent care.
