Obituary of Allan C. Shartrand

Glenville- Allan C. Shartrand, born July 8, 1932, passed away peacefully at his home in Glenville surrounded by his loving family, on  November 17, 2022.  Born in Cohoes, he was the son of the late George and Veronica (Grogan) Shartrand.  A lifelong area resident, Allan graduated from Mont Pleasant High School, Class of 1950, and received his BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Clarkson University in 1954. In 1969, Al earned an MS degree, also in Mechanical Engineering, from Union College.

He married the former Carol A. Civitello on June 15, 1979, whom he met at G.E. in Schenectady. Al was an engineer at G.E. from 1954-1992.  He had an extensive background in the power generation business for his entire career of thirty-eight years.  He was part of the GE team sent to China to sell turbines/generators in the 1970’s. He held seven U.S. patents and authored numerous I.E.E.E papers. Al was a member of IEEE, ELFUN Society and the Clarkson University Alumni.  Since retiring from GE, he served as  a consultant in Generator Engineering for conceptual and final designs of present day generators.

His hobbies were swimming, downhill skiing, and softball, where he was a member of several leagues. He coached his boys in baseball, flag football and basketball. He practiced the Catholic Faith.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; his sons, Douglas A. (Jo Ann), Brian A., Thomas A. (Stephanie) and Michael A. (Petra) Shartrand; two stepdaughters, Deborah (David) Benjamin and Denise (William) Bollock. Five grandchildren: David Wania, Emily Shartrand, Christopher Shartrand, Erica and Ryan Bollock and great granddaughter Riley Wania. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Al was predeceased by his brother George Shartrand.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend and may call on Tuesday  from 10 am till 11:30 am with a celebration of life to immediately follow. With Rev. John Califano presiding.

 Interment to follow at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery. 

Memorials in Allan’s name may be made to Community Hospice, 310 S. Manning Blvd., Albany, NY 12208. Please make checks payable to The Community Hospice.
