Peggy Walsh

Obituary of Peggy Jo Walsh

Peggy Jo Walsh, 84, formerly of Glenville, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2023, at Eddy Senior Care Center following a long illness. Peggy was born in Niagara Falls, NY, the daughter of Kenneth Councilman and Mildred (Stanton) Councilman. She was a graduate of Elmira's Southside High School's Class of 1956. Peggy attended college for a short while before marrying her high school sweetheart, Lawrence Walsh, on September 17, 1957.

In 1963, the couple relocated to Glenville, NY where they raised their family.  Peggy was active in her children's upbringing and school activities as well as being a den mother for the Cub Scouts. As the kids got older, Peggy went to work at the family business, Willowbrook Detailing and became an accomplished Structural Steel Detailer.  She later retired in 2009 from her sons’ business, Upstate Detailing.

Peggy enjoyed being outdoors and took great pride in her lawn and shrubs.  Her hobbies included needlepoint and other hand crafts as well. The family fondly recalls the afghans she had made for each of the grandchildren.  Peggy was also an expert card player and enjoyed nothing more than a family card game with plenty of ice cream on hand.  In the late 1990’s, Peggy and Larry moved to Southern Pines, NC, where she became very involved in her Methodist Church.  Larry passed away on September 15, 2006, just shy of their 50th wedding anniversary.  She was predeceased by her brother Gerald Councilman in 2007 and her grandson Shawn Walsh in 2005.

Survivors include her children: daughters; Lorie (Greg) Getz and Kathy (Jason) Laing and sons; Dan (Joy), Steve (Cindy), Jon (Renee) and David (Melissa) Walsh.  She leaves behind 23 grandchildren and several great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

A Memorial service is being planned in the spring of this year.  In Peggy’s words, “Please do not be sad, for I will at last be in my eternal heavenly home!”

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Shawn Walsh Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o BH-BL High School, or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
