Obituary of Marvin Weiss

Glenville- Marvin (Marv) Weiss passed away at his Glenville residence on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, after a one year's battle with stomach and liver cancer.

Marvin Weiss was the third child and second son of Philip and Anne (Cohen) Weiss and was born on March 2, 1944, in Stoneham, Massachusetts. He grew up on the family farm (Weiss Farm) and graduated from Stoneham High School in 1961.

Marv married Vera Jones in July 1969 and they have been inseparable ever since.

Both Marv & Vera have travelled extensively and have visited all the states in the USA as well as 54 countries and all seven continents.

He is survived by his brother, Larry (Katie), sister, Marsha Lilly and sister-in-law, Donna Weiss as well as many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents and younger brother, Saul.

Marv received his degree in mechanical engineering from Northeastern University (1967). He also earned his Master's in Environmental Engineering (1978) and MBA (1990) from RPI.

After receiving his engineering degree in 1967, he worked for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, Connecticut as an experimental test engineer working in acoustics research. In 1971, he was recruited by General Electric's Gas Turbine Department in Schenectady, NY. During his 30-year career with GE, he worked in engineering development, design, requisitions, and applications engineering. He also was a manager of turbine proposals.

One of his assignments was to provide engineering and business development at GE's Moscow, Russia office. He recruited and trained local staff as well as introducing Russian customers to the latest power plant technology. He subsequently provided critical engineering support resulting in critical sales. He retired from GE as Manager of Global Field Applications Engineering in 2001.

Since his retirement he was active with Empire State Aeroscience Museum (Board of Trustees) and Civil Air Patrol (CAP). As a proud volunteer at CAP, Major Marv served in all flight positions including photographer, mission pilot, transport pilot as well as trainer. He was Schenectady Squadron's education officer for five years teaching cadets aerospace, model rocketry and astronomy. He also served as their finance officer for fifteen years keeping the books balanced against the headwinds of government changes.

During his duties as Secretary for ESAM's Board of Trustees, he was part of their Executive Committee and instrumental for bringing the Concord to the museum - now a landmark for the Capital District.

Marv's hobbies included ice hockey referee (33 years), kayaking, astronomy, flying (private pilot), travelling, downhill skiing, geocaching, SCUBA/ snorkeling, computers, and the outdoors. Along with his wife, Vera, they enjoyed extensive traveling visiting all 50 US states, 54 foreign counties and all seven continents. With their love of seeing animals in their natural habitat, they went on numerous African safaris, trekked mountain gorillas in Rwanda, orangutans in Borneo, "the big five" in Africa, Tasmanian devils in Australia and a zillion penguins in Antarctica.

Funeral services will be held privately for the family.

Interment will take place on Tuesday, April 18^th at 11:30 am at Sweetman Cemetery, Charlton.
