I am 67 and have begun my memoirs. Jeff Blatnick was such an inspiration and gave me so much hope when he won the 1984 Olympic Greco Wrestling Championship. I was currently in radiation for Hodgkins Lymphoma and there - on the television was Jeff, A Hodgkins survivor in great health winning for the USA. He inspired me and gave me hope. I wish I had written to him to let him know what a difference that made. RIP Jeff.

I didn't know Jeff personally, but I felt like I did. I also was a Niskayuna graduate, and his courageous story has always been an inspiration, and not just to those who are athletically minded. Thank you all for being the source of the marvelous person that was Jeff Blatnick. My sincerest condolences, Robyn Leith Stewart

Jeff and I played bass together in the Niskayuna Orchestra for a short time in 1972-73. I ran into him a few times over the years and always came away with the feeling that the "little" freshmen I knew had become a great person. My condolences to Lori and his whole family and the rest of the world. Very kind regards, Don

I only met Jeff one time. But that one time was enough. Here's the email I sent to friends after meeting him and getting his autograph: "I took my white collared USA wrestling shirt hoping to get autographs. I got Olympic gold medalist Rulon Gardner’s, Olympic gold medalist Jeff Blatnick’s, Olympic gold medalist Cael Sanderson’s, and 2008 Olympic competitor’s (and I believe will be gold medalist) Ben Askren’s. Rulon and Blatnick both talked to me for a minute and were unbelievably humble and almost shocked I asked for their autographs. [snip] Jeff Blatnick was there as part of the 1980 team that didn’t go to the Olympics because of the boycott. The team did an autograph signing that day, but I missed it. At the end of the day We spotted him in crossing the lobby leaving. I said “Mr. Blatnick?” and he stopped and looked at me saying “Yes?” Looking at me like I was a bill collector. I asked for his autograph and he was so appreciative. He had to holler to his family to not leave without him. He signed my shirt and talked with us for a second. He even asked mine and Stacey’s name. I thought that was really cool of him" I am so sorry for your loss! Everything I know about this man says he was so much more than a mere man.

Although Jeff was much much more than "just" a wrestler, this is the context I knew him best from...I recall when he first started wrestling on our Niskayuna H.S. team, he could barely support his weight on the climbing rope in he gym at the start of the season...By the end of the season he was climbing up and down the rope like an expert...Just one small example of the many goals Jeff could and would accomplish once he set his mind to it...

My deepest condolences go out to Jeff's family and friends. I want to thank him for his life time of service to the wrestling community. The fondest memory of Jeff's kindness I have was from when I was coaching a fledgling wrestling club at RPI. I had a talented heavyweight with no one to work out with. I asked Jeff to come in and train with him. He gladly donated time out of his busy schedule. I know this made a tremendously positive impression on me as well as my student-athlete. I know that Jeff positively impacted the lives of some many others. He will be greatly missed.

The positive impact that Jeff Blatnick had on my life was invaluable. Although I never met him an autographed picture of Jeff hung above my bed during my teenage years. He touched so many in a positive way that only now is he aware of the impact he had on the lives of so many. God bless you and your family and thank you to Jeff for returning a signed photo to a 14 year old kid for Christmas in 1984.

Jeff Blatnick was and will forever be a hero to those of us who came to know him in the course of his all-too-short life. In an age when the word hero is over used and mis-applied, it is fitting that we all take time to acknowledge the blessing of knowing a real hero...a man's man...courageous, selfless, humble, challenging, genuine, inspiring and forever your friend. I won't relate the details of my association with Jeff, suffice it to say that he was a guy who -- no matter how long ago you saw or talked with him -- it was like just yesterday. I am but one of countless many whose life has been and will forever be enriched by Jeff's.
My prayers go out to all in the family. May you take some comfort in the knowledge that Jeff's legacy extends far and wide and beyond his earthly life and that he will continue to inspire so many.
It is a sad thing to lose a hero. Jeff...you were and forever will be a hero, and friend, of mine...Richard McKeown

I have a memory of Jeff "kid" sitting us and bringing popcorn his mom popped for us. His smile always lit up the room. Jeff was one of the "older boys" on Whitney Dr. that I thought were so "grown up". Watching Jeff attend the Olympics was one of the most exciting moments, watching our very sweet neighbor actually win the gold was beyond words. I remember a large group of us greeting Jeff at the airport, returning from the games, and he was so happy and full of life. My deepest condolences to Jeffrey's family. May you find some comfort in knowing the mark he has left on this earth.
Warmest regards,
Andrea Smith Betts

Jeff was my anchor MMA judge with the New Jersey Athletic Control Board. I could always count on him to come through in the biggest of fights. He also mentored our newer judges. He is one of the main reasons that MMA is as big as it is today. Besides being a legendary wrestler, he was an irreplacable friend. Truly a man of integrity, compassion, drive and honesty. I will be at your services to honor you, on behalf of all those in MMA who you touched. I already miss talking to you.

Rest in Peace Jeff, you inspired me as an athlete when I met you at the Dapper Dan Classic in 1994! I continued on in College to be a national champion and in large part due to the inspiration you provided! After I met you I did some research and discovered you were a gold medalist and NEVER evem mentioned it to me! Thanks for the kind words of encouragment you gave me it meant much much more than you ever knew! Thanks Jeff for being such a fantastic inspiration to all of us wrestlers! You will be missed!
