Obituary of Loretta Kay Irish

Loretta Kay Irish, 87, known lovingly as “Kay”, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2023. Born on April 17, 1935, she was the daughter of Sylvia Welch (Sutherland). She was raised in rural Washington County and attended Greenwich High School.

Kay pursued her passion for helping others as a nurse; she graduated from the Samaritan School of Nursing. This decision would shape her professional path and serve as a testament to her unwavering spirit and strength.

Over the course of her 30-year career at St. Clare's Hospital, Kay became known as an exceptional nurse who mentored many. Her dedication to her patients and colleagues was evident in her tireless work ethic, compassionate nature, and energy in the fast-paced emergency room.

In 1956, she married the love of her life, Gilbert Irish. In 1959, they settled in Glenville, NY; many fond memories were created in their forever home and Glenville neighborhood, where everyone knew each other. Kay was ahead of her time; however, raising her children in the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake School District, she inspired others as a working mom.

Throughout her life, Kay was a lover of jazz music, often embarking on Jazz Cruises aboard the Dutch Apple Cruise Line. She also found immense joy in spending time with her grandchildren, who were a constant source of pride and happiness for her. Over her lifetime, Kay grew a special bond with each of her dogs, and they were like family.

Kay's zest for life led her to explore the Caribbean through cruise vacations and trips to Puerto Rico, where she soaked in the beauty and culture of each destination. Her life serves as an inspiration to all who knew her and as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always a light to guide us—she was that light!

Predeceased by her husband, Gilbert, in 1998; and her cherished grandson, Dylan Gilbert Irish.

She is survived by her loving children, Richard (Mary) Irish and Joanne (James) Irish Wood; grandchildren, Kristin (Gavin) DuGuay, Michael (Ashley) Wood, and Graham Richard Irish; great-grandchildren, Avery and Liam DuGuay, Greyson Wood, and Roman and Harlow Wood; brothers, Graham (Kitty) Sutherland, Theodore “Ted” (Karen) Sutherland, and Peter (Nancy) Sutherland; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Kay’s unwavering spirit and love will be deeply missed by those fortunate enough to know her. There are no services scheduled at this time. Kay will be laid to rest with her husband at St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Glenville.

In memory of Kay, please consider memorial contributions to the Animal Protective Foundation, 53 Maple Ave, Schenectady, NY 12302.
