Obituary of Richard Smith

Richard Alan Smith, 66, passed away following a brief illness February 14, 2014 at Ellis Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Amsterdam, NY the son of the late Herbert W. and Florence Vanderhyden Smith, he grew up in Glenville. A 1965 graduate of BH-BL Central Schools, he entered the Air Force during the Vietnam era where he served nearly three years in Thailand. He met his wife, June M. Nicolella of Gloversville, NY, on a blind date set up by friends. They were united in marriage on February 14th, 33 years ago. Richard was a Computer Analyst whose career spanned over 30 years for the GE Company. He retired in June, 2011. He was a long-time member of the Rotterdam Elks Lodge. Richard enjoyed the outdoors, woodworking and was an avid reader, especially mystery novels. He was also predeceased by a brother, Neil W. Smith. Survivors include his wife June, their two children: Shaun Smith (Christina) of Clifton Park and Shannon Smith of St. Augustine, FL; his cherished grandson, Isaiah Smith; beloved sister, Valerie Alexander (Joseph) of Clifton Park and brother, Garet Smith (Cathy) of Ballston Spa. Richard is the loving uncle of Ian Smith, Tara VanKeuren, Neil Smith, Ryan McCormick, Lindsay and Christina Nicolella. A celebration of life service will be conducted at the Glenville Funeral Home Chapel Tuesday (Feb. 18) at 11 AM with Rev. John Hopkins officiating. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend and may also call Monday from 4 PM to 7 PM at Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd. Glenville.
