Norman Smith

Obituary of Norman Smith

Norman Nicholas Smith, 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving children at his home on Thursday, February 27, 2014. Born in Amsterdam, New York he was the son of the late Nicholas and Hedwig Kolterman Smith. He was raised in West Glenville and was a 1939 graduate of Scotia-Glenville High School. It was there, in West Glenville that he proudly carried on the Smith Farm, which was the family farm passed down to him by his father. He was known for keeping his barns immaculate, and took great care of his cattle, dairy cows, and hens. When he wasn't tending to his barns and animals, he was often found at his farm stand selling beautiful strawberries, potatoes and other various farm fresh items. Norman was an extremely hard worker; owning a farm was only his day job. At night, he worked the third shift at G.E. assembling gas turbines. Norman continued working for G.E. until 1983, when he retired after 34 years. Throughout his whole life, you could always find Norman with one of his many Labrador retrievers by his side. He kept an active social life; he was a part of the National Rifle Association, and a dedicated member of the First Reformed Church of West Glenville. Norman enjoyed hunting, watching professional wrestling and attending local wrestling events, as well as watching NASCAR. His love for nature never left him, as he was passionate about living by the "law of the land". Norman was predeceased by his loving wife of 64 years Dorothy (Zimmerman) Smith. Survivors include his sons, David and Donald (Marcia) Smith; his daughter Norma Smith; his five grandchildren Lisa Craig, Andrew Smith, Eric Smith, Amy Attanasio and Kendra Smith; as well as his four great grandchildren Timothy Craig, Eliza Craig, Jacob Craig and Maya Smith; and his beloved sister Arlene Krutz. Calling hours will be Tuesday, March 11th from 6 - 8 PM at Glenville Funeral Home located at 9 Glenridge Road, East Glenville, NY. Funeral services will follow on Wednesday, March 12th at 11am at Glenville Funeral Home. Internment services will take place in the spring at Fairview Cemetery located in Amsterdam, NY.
