Obituary of Richard Ketterer

Burnt Hills- Richard J. Ketterer, 98, Surrounded by his loving family died peacefully at home on Wednesday April 2, 2014Richard was born in Castalia, OH, the son of the late Karl and Flossie Smith Ketterer. He was educated in the Sandusky, OH school system and graduated as Valedictorian of the class of 1933. He then attended the University of Chicago and graduated in 1937 with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. Richard went to work for Columbia Chemical a division of Pittsburgh Plate Glass (PPG), where he received his first patent. In 1942 Richard tried to enlist in the Navy but was returned to work at PPG because of his research work on the plastic eventually used in bomber canopies and eyeglasses.In 1952 He joined General Electric's Insulating Materials Department in Coshocton OH, remaining there until the company transferred him to Schenectady in 1958. During this period that he received an additional seven patents for the development of Mica paper used in the electronics industry.For Many years Richard was a member of the Board of Directors of the Southern Adirondack Library Association, and the Burnt Hills Library.Richard was preceded in death by Rachel his wife of 65 years, in 2009. He is is survived by two sons, Richard J. Ketterer II (Helen), and David C. Ketterer; five grand children, Michael (Evelyn), Matthew (Rachele), Olivia, Rebecca Schleich (Paul), and Stacey Wilson (Mark); and three great grand Children, Piper Wilson, Lilliana Schleich, and Abigail Schleich; as well as many nieces and nephews.His sister Harriet Ketterer-Wray predeceased Richard. Calling hours will be held on Sunday April 6, 2014 from 1:00 - 3:00pm at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd. Glenville. Internment services will take place in the spring at Sweetman Cemetery, Charlton, NY.
