Dorothy Everson

Obituary of Dorothy Everson

Dorothy Hamner Everson, 85, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2014 at the Baptist Heath Nursing center with her family by her side. She was born in Portsmouth, OH, on May 31, 1929, and was the daughter of the late Lee Edgar Hamner and Margaret Maupin Hamner. Dorothy enjoyed a wonderful marriage of 58 years to Charles William Everson, who passed away in July of 2011. Dorothy graduated from North High School in Columbus, OH, and from Ohio State University in 1951 where she was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. She was a secretary for the football coaches at the Ohio State University's Athletic Department, including Woody Hays, and an administrative assistant for the University Development Fund before moving to Schenectady, NY, with her husband in 1956. She was employed at the Union College Civil Engineering Department before starting her family. Dorothy worked part time as a teacher assistant in the Scotia Glenville Middle School and as an administrative assistant at the A.W. Lawrence Insurance and Blake Realty. She was active in the Schenectady Panhellenic Association where she served as president in 1967. She was also a volunteer at Ellis Hospital and an active member of the First Reformed Church of Scotia. Dorothy and her husband lived locally in Glenville and Ballston for 44 years. Dorothy enjoyed traveling with her family and especially spending time at their condo in North Myrtle Beach, SC for 23 years. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who always found time to lend a listening ear and gentle hand. She had a special fondness for animals and would nurse injured ones back to health. Dorothy was excellent at sewing, golfing, and bowling and was active in the Panhellenic Bowling Group and the Edison Club League for many years. The family would like to thank the Baptist Health Nursing Staff for their excellent and compassionate care during the past year. They exceeded all expectations in the kindness and attention shown to Dorothy. Dorothy is survived by her son Gregory Carl of Virginia Beach, VA; her daughter Cynthia Lee Knox (Jeffrey) of Clifton Park, NY; and her three grandchildren - Andrew William Everson, Katharine Michaela Knox and Abigail Rose Knox.
