Obituary of JoAnne Steubing

JoAnne Patton Steubing, 89, of Niskayuna, NY, died on Wednesday, October 29, 2014. Born on Valentine's Day, 1925 in Youngstown, Ohio, she was the first daughter of Stewart DeUngo and Arta Phipps Patton. She graduated from Annapolis, Maryland, high School in 1941, Bard-Avon Business College of Baltimore with honors in 1942, and worked for the Baltimore Gas and Electric for 2 years. At this time she also studied violin and music curriculum at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore before attending and graduating from The Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, NY, with a Bachelor of Music in 1948. In 1947 JoAnne married Carl M. Steubing, Jr. who has predeceased her. She is survived by their 5 children Sandra Steubing of Albany, NY; Kristine (Cameron) Crollard of Weeki Wachee, Florida; Heidi Steubing of Schenectady, NY; Kurt (Beth) Steubing of Hopewell Junction, NY; and Ted (Mary) Steubing of Amherst, New Hampshire. Also grandchildren Corrine Crollard Popun (Chris) of Gainesville, Fl; Megan Steubing and Kyle Steubing of Hopewell Jct., NY. Other survivors are nephews Michael Allen Smith of Camden, Delaware; and Scott (Lori) Smith of Severna Park, MD. JoAnne's music degree was as a violinist. During her children's young years her music career consisted of playing for church services on both the violin and organ. After moving to Scotia, she accompanied church and community choruses directed by her husband, a choral conductor in the Scotia Glenville schools. Eventually she started playing in the Schenectady Symphony, then joined the Albany Symphony which was a professional orchestra and performed with them at both the Troy Music Hall and the Palace Theater in Albany for 25 years. During this time JoAnne also taught in the Schenectady and Scotia school systems while also establishing a private Suzuki Violin Studio of 44 students. Last but not least, JoAnne was an adjunct faculty member at the College of St. Rose for 10 years. In 1985 JoAnne moved to Florida to be near her daughter Kris and first grandchild, Corinne. While there she performed as a freelance musician in and around Tampa Bay and spent many years with the Southwest Florida Orchestra, a professional orchestra in Fort Myers, FL. Summers were spent at Galway Lake where she loved the family's camp life centered around the water, swimming and sailing. The camp became her favorite home with the focus on summer activities amid family gatherings and celebrations of July 4th. A Celebration of life will be celebrated on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 1:00pm from the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd. Glenville.
