Obituary of Lucille Stewart

Lucille J. Stewart passed into eternity on Saturday December 1, 2012 at Kingsway Arms Nursing Center. She was 97 years old, born June 23, 1915 in Northampton, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Ira W. and Carrie M. Laub. A graduate of Northampton High School and Lock Haven (PA) State Teachers College. She married Robert C. Stewart of Northampton on August 1, 1936 where he taught high schooland she substitute taught elementary school. After an academic year in Philadelphia, they moved to Dover, Delaware in 1946, intending to spend the rest of their lives there. However, new struggles and opportunities led them to move to Syracuse, New York in 1955 when Dr. Stewart took a faculty position in the School of Education at Syracuse University. He passed away of illness December 2, 1970. Mrs. Stewart was a sports fan from her earliest days-her high school yearbook said she could be heard above the rest of the crowd at basketball games. She and her husband became intense Syracuse University football and basketball fans, something that continued when she moved to Shady Lane Apartments to be near her family in Glenville in 1979. Before entering Kingsway Arms she lived with her granddaughter Sonja and family in Loudonville for 2 ½ years continuing to be known as a SU fan. She was a quiet friend of many, in her church and the area in which she lived, and an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Schenectady. Having taken the attitude that "If you can't fight it, join it," she joined her husband and son in taking the required tests and becoming an amateur radio operator. She succeeded in achieving one of her goals-outliving her aunt Helen in Pittsburgh and becoming the longest lived one in her family. Lucille was predeceased by four brothers: Donald, Gerald, Norman and Roger Laub. She is survived by a son James Stewart (Alice); three grandchildren Martha Alford (Andrew) of Newton Square, PA Sara Stewart of Nashville, TN, and Sonja Flynn (Bryan) of Loudonville; and three nieces and two nephews. Dr and Mrs. Stewart were predeceased by a daughter Kay Carol Stewart (1948-1951). Relatives and friends may call at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd. on Friday (Dec.7) from 7 PM to 9 PM. Funeral services will be at 11:30 AM Saturday (Dec. 8) at First Presbyterian Church, 209 Union St. Schenectady. Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery in Dover, Delaware alongside her husband and daughter.
