Obituary of Martha Schmidt

Martha V. Schmidt, age 94, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2015 at Ellis Hospital, Nott Street, Schenectady, NY. Martha was born in Dallas City, Illinois, in 1920. She was the daughter of Leslie and Velna Hutson, and the oldest of four girls. Martha married Harold R. Schmidt, of Wisconsin, in 1940. The young couple lived in Austin, Texas until the completion of Harold's doctoral work in chemistry. His first employment took them to Richland, Washington, and the second, to Schenectady, NY in 1954. Martha, Harold, and their two daughters made their home in East Glenville. Martha earned her realtor's license in the 1960s, and briefly worked in real estate. In 1983, the couple moved to Conway, SC, where they enjoyed 17 years of retirement. After Harold's passing, Martha returned to East Glenville in 2001, and lived in Shady Lane Apartments. In 2007, Martha moved to Ingersoll Assisted Living in Niskayuna. A fall led to skilled nursing care at Ellis Residential and Rehabilitation Center, where she became a resident in November 2009. Martha was an avid reader, and enjoyed hours of reading each day. She was a thoughtful, dear and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Martha is survived by her sister, Marjorie Doubet, of Geneseo, IL; her daughters, Patricia Simoni of Morgantown, WV and Susan (Eric) Jerome of East Glenville, NY; grandchildren, Susanne (Robert) Coffield, Joanna Simoni (Geoffrey Mann), Jessica (Bill) Norton and Benjamin Jerome; and by four great-grandchildren, Daniel and Rachel Coffield and Nicholas and Audrey Mann; and by many nieces and nephews. Martha was predeceased by her husband, Harold R. Schmidt; her parents, Leslie and Velna Hutson; and by her sisters, Mildred Morrell and Mary Gray. We are grateful to the fine healthcare team of Ellis Residential & Rehabilitation Center, who has provided a warm, loving, and safe environment for Martha. Thank you also to the staff of Ellis Hospital and The Community Hospice of Schenectady for their kind and expert care.
