Obituary of Gerald Hamm

Gerald Everett Hamm, "Jerry", 86, of Maywood Drive, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2015. Jerry was born on August 17, 1928 in Johnstown, NY, son of the late Lionel G.K. Hamm and Gladys E. Templeton Hamm. He grew up in Johnstown attending Knox Junior High and graduated Johnstown High School's Class of '46. Jerry lettered in three varsity sports and was a National Honor Society Academic Student. He received a full baseball scholarship to Clarkson College of Technology (Potsdam) and graduated with a BEE degree in 1950. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950-53 as 1st Lt. He remained with the A.F. Reserves for 5 more years serving in various schools and assignments across the U.S. He managed the Lowery AFB Baseball Team in 1953 and won the Colorado State Championship that year as pitcher going 21 games without a loss in '52-53. He married the former Norma Ruth Wilson on October 8, 1955 in Plattsburg, NY. Jerry was employed at G.E. in Schenectady from '53-'72, retiring as Manager of Manufacturing Administration. He went on to work at Dale Carnegie and Associates as Regional Manager of Instruction in the Northeast U.S. and Canada. Jerry won several awards for excellence through his years at Carnegie Institute of Eastern NY. He taught and trained all courses, wrote manuals for training instructors, wrote and conducted workshops for other companies to improve by. He retired in 1992. He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Scotia where he served as Deacon and Elder and served on various projects and committees. His hobbies included baseball, golf and bowling. He enjoyed camping, travel, flower gardening and woodworking. Mr. Hamm was a coach for the Beukendall Little League and a Boy Scout Leader. He was predeceased by his brothers Wilfred and Milton Hamm. Survivors include his wife, Norma Hamm, son, Dean (Julie) Hamm of Syracuse and four grandchildren: Clarissa Hamm, Ashley Perry, Michael Perry and Kristopher Hamm. Jerry also leaves behind his cherished great grandson Cameron Perry and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 10 AM Saturday, February 7 at First Reformed Church in Scotia with calling hours at church Friday, February 6th from 4 -7 PM. Interment will follow the service on Saturday at Park Cemetery in Scotia. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to 1st Reformed Church 224 N.
