Obituary of Avis Engert

Avis B. (Davies) Engert, 93, died peacefully on April 12, 2015 at Glendale Nursing Home surrounded by her loving and devoted family. She was born February 18, 1922 in St. Johnsville, NY and was the daughter of the late John and Bessie Davies. Avis grew up in Ilion, NY and was a 1940 graduate of Ilion High School. In 1946, Avis married the love of her life, Walter J. Engert, and in 1959 moved to Scotia, NY. Avis worked at various jobs for Ellis and St. Clare's Hospital (retiring from St. Clare's Radiation Department). In 1978, she and her husband moved to sunny Port Orange, FL to start their retirement. Avis enjoyed volunteering her time at the Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach, FL. She was a very active, kind and compassionate person. In 1985, Avis was predeceased by her beloved husband of 39 years, Walter. She was also predeceased by her cherished three grandchildren, Jimmy, Tommy and Meghan Walker. She is survived by her devoted and loving children, Francis Engert (Nancy), Frederick Engert (Patti) and Dawn Walker (Jim); and cherished grandchildren, Dean Engert, Greg Engert (Kelsey), Lara Engert (Shane), Jonathan Engert; as well as her four cherished great-grandchildren, Hayden and Adam Engert, Maggie and Penelope Cheary. Avis' family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to the Pine Plains staff at Glendale Nursing Home for all their wonderful support, comfort and compassionate care given to her. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Thursday, April 16, 2015 at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, Glenville, NY, with the Rev. Pamela Hoh, officiating. Calling hours for family and friends will precede the service from 3 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.
