Obituary of Duane Sherman

Duane C. Sherman, 88, passed away peacefully on Friday June 12, 2015 at Schuyler Ridge Rehabilitation Center in Clifton Park, NY. Born in Canton Township, Michigan on July 20, 1926; he was the son of the late Myron and Thelma Sherman. Duane was a graduate of Cass Tech in Detroit, Michigan. He completed two undergraduate degrees at the University of Michigan, where he was a member of the Triangle Fraternity. Duane also earned his M.S. degree in Physics from Union College in Schenectady. Duane proudly served in the Army during WWII and then continued on to join the Army Ordnance Corps in 1951 until 1957. On October 6, 1951 he married his beloved wife Louise (Mickey). Duane began a 34 year career working at KAPL as a nuclear physicist in Niskayuna in 1953. He retired in 1987, later joining the KAPL Retiree's Club. Duane enjoyed many outdoor activities including skiing, hiking, camping, sailing, visiting Cape Cod and especially flying, so much so that he earned his pilot's license. More than anything, he loved spending time with his family. Duane was best known for his strong moral compass, intelligence and his unique sense of humor. He is survived by his wife Mickey; children Janice (David) Meierdiercks, Jeffrey (Jo Anne) Sherman, Laurie (Steven) Carter, Richard (Kathy) Sherman; and daughter-in-law Laura Alden. Duane is also survived by his grandchildren Sean, Brian, Meghan, Patrice, Darren, Jay, Alyssa, Matthew, Sander and Lexi; great-grandson Thomas; sister Carol Williams; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son James Matthew Sherman; sisters Irene Van Cleave, Marion Crawford, and Dorothy Collins; and brother James Sherman. He was also predeceased by his loyal canine companion Cassi. Relatives and friends may call at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd. Glenville from 9:30-10:30am on Friday June 19, 2015. Funeral Services will take place at 10:30am at the funeral home. Burial, with military honors, follows at 12:30pm at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
