Obituary of John Hugo

John Allan Hugo, 83, late of Scotia, New York. Died at home after a long illness, September, 19, 2015. Born July 21, 1932 in Escanaba, Michigan, to the Rev. Dr. John Hugo of Malaxs, Finland, and Pearl Laverne Olson Hugo of Escanaba, Michigan. Preceded in death by both parents, and a sister, Ann Hugo Peacock. Survived by wife of 62 years Janet L. Stoddard Hugo, daughter Constance Ann Hugo Matsumoto, and sons John William Hugo and Stephen Paul Hugo, five grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. A graduate of Mont Pleasant Technical/Electrical Course, he worked for 23 years at the General Electric Research Laboratory as a metalurgical electronmicroscopist. He took graduate engineering courses at RPI. In 1970, his design modifications of a Philipps EM300 electron microscope, together with his great skill in sample preparation, led to the first ever image of rows of atoms at a direct magnification of 1 million times. For this achievement, Allan shared a gold medal from the Electron Microscope Society of America with his supervisor, the late Dr. Victor Phillips. Later, Allan worked in service and sales divisions of manufacturers of electron microscopes; regularly setting sales records with Siemens, Hitachi, Zeiss, Electroscan, and Philipps Electronics. He traveled to many parts of the world, including Japan, Holland, and Germany. In recent years, he lived in retirement in Scotia. He loved photography and music. He was a charter member of Faith Baptist Church in Rexford, New York. He was a choir member and songleader for over 40 years at Central and Faith Baptist Churches. He was exceptionally wise, generous and kind, a genuinely good person, and the Lord prospered his work. He supported foreign missions, and the Schenectady City Mission. He was a wonderful husband and father, and will be greatly missed by his many friends. He now rests in the arms of Jesus. Special thanks to the wonderful staff of Community Hospice. Services will be held on Tuesday September 22, 2015 at 11:00am at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, Glenville. Relatives and friends may call prior to the service from 10-11am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens, Colonie. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Jude's Hospital, World Gospel Mission, and the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism (ABWE).
