Anthony Califano

Obituary of Anthony J. Califano

Frank Benedetto and Bob Streifer, caregivers and very good friends, sadly announce the passing of Anthony J. Califano on Saturday December 5, 2015. Anthony was born in Schenectady, NY, the son of the late Jerry and Rose (DeNora) Califano. He received his Bachelors of Arts and Masters of Arts from the State University of NY at Albany, and certification in School Administration from the College of St. Rose. In 1964, Anthony began his teaching career at the Richard O'Rourke Middle School in Burnt Hills, as a teacher of Reading, English and Social Studies; and subsequently became the Dean of Students. He retired in 2001, having served the school district and community for 37 years. Anthony was a member of the Mt. Carmel School Board in Schenectady and the Burnt Hills Ballston Lake Education Foundation. Anthony had a wonderful 45 year marriage to his wife, Rose, his constant companion and his best friend. Together they enjoyed antiquing, traveling, and learning about America's heritage and foreign cultures. Both were admired for their knowledge of history and collected items representative of their travels. They enjoyed stopping at antique shops and craft fairs, and were known for their exquisite taste in decorating their home. He and Rose entertained their many friends with gracious cocktail and dinner parties. They will miss Anthony. Anthony leaves behind his loving, caring and most dedicated friend, his beloved wife, Rose (Celi) Califano; Bob and Frank; Ann and Bob Schebesta, two very close longtime friends; a sister; brother-in-law; niece and nephew; as well as other relatives. A Mass of Christian Death and Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, December 10 from the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Saratoga Rd., Glenville. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery, Saratoga. Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd., Glenville from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 9. Memorial contributions in Anthony's name may be made to the Anthony J. Califano Scholarship Fund for the Burnt Hills Ballston Lake Schools at any Trustco Bank branch location.
