Obituary of Maria Teresa Mercado

Maria Teresa Mercado, 80, of Scotia, NY, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, March 19, 2016, surrounded by her family at her side after an extended illness. Teresa, to her family and friends, was a loving and dedicated mother and friend and devoted member of the Catholic faith. Her sweet disposition and kindness was shared by all and she will be remembered for her fine cooking, needlework, gardening and generosity to those in need. Christian Burial Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Church, Second Street, Scotia, on Wednesday, March 23, at 9:30 a.m. Father Russo will be officiating. Visitation will be held at the Glenville Funeral Home from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22. Burial will immediately follow the church services at St. Anthony’s Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Maria Teresa was born in Guayama, Puerto Rico, on February 20, 1936, one of nine children to Eladio Aponte and Flora Aponte Vasquez. She came to the United States upon marriage to her late husband, Alejandro Mercado, on September 23, 1957. They were married for 40 years. They resided in Manhattan, NY and then moved to Schenectady in 1965. They settled in Scotia in 1979. An active devotee, Maria Teresa, was a member of St. Luke’s Church in Schenectady, and then became a committed parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church in Scotia. She retired from Coyne Industrial Laundry in Schenectady in 2005 where she had worked for approximately 25 years. Maria Teresa is survived by her four children, Elizabeth Thompson of Euless, Texas, David Mercado, Scotia, Ivan Mercado, Scotia, and Caroline Mercado, Lewisburg, PA. She also is survived by her five grandchildren, Amber Mercado, William Thompson, Courtney Vrabel, Roman Mercado Bonanno and Julien Mercado Bonanno, and her three great grand-children, Mackenzie Vrabel, Nora Vrabel and Karalee Thompson. Her remaining siblings reside in Puerto Rico. She is preceded in death by four siblings including her twin brother, Eulaterio Aponte, and her husband, Alejandro Mercado. Memorial donations may be given to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. The family of Mrs. Mercado wishes to thank all who graciously made time and effort to visit her during the extent of her illness, and the staff of St. Peter’s Hospital, Schenectady Visiting Nurses, Schenectady Hospice along with Ms. Susan Wuest of Schenectady Long Term Care, for the genuine care provided to her towards the conclusion of her life.
