Obituary of Francis B. Campbell

Francis B. Campbell died on April 23, 2016 in his sleep at age 98. He was born December 15, 1917 in Poughkeepsie, NY. He lived in Scotia, NY for 60 years. He was the only surviving son of Frank Campbell and Helen (Jordan) Campbell. Graduating from Clarkson University in 1942, with a degree in chemical engineering, he was commissioned through ROTC. He married Edith Hayford in June, 1942, upon graduation he immediately went into military service. Francis served in the Army in Africa and Europe. He was about to be deployed to Japan, when the war ended. His work history began after service in World War II. He worked at General Electric for 40 years, retiring in 1982 after a successful career with Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, where he managed the engineering services division. He was always grateful for his scholarship to attend Clarkson, he also played on the school’s football team. Attending alumni reunions yearly, he kept in touch with old friends. He served as class reunion chair, Alumni Association vice president, and officer of the Alumni Association Board of Governors. His honors included The Golden Knight, which is the highest award honoring Clarkson University alumni. In addition to work and active participation as an alumnus, Frank was interested in dog training. He participated in a training program with his boxer, Alfie. He and Edie took many trips on their motorcycles. They were charter members of the Edison Club and enjoyed golf together and with friends. Francis is survived by his wife of 74 years, Edith, as well as several nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the staff at Glendale Home for lengthy care and sensitive support, and gratitude to Hospice. Calling hours are Monday evening from 6 to 8 PM at Glenville Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at 9 AM at The Church of Immaculate Conception, located in Glenville NY. Internment will follow at St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Glenville. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice or the Animal Protective Foundation of Schenectady, 53 Maple Avenue.
