I owe my life to Mr. Brown, He gave me so much to live with, most of all is dedication, to my family, my music and to myself. Mr. Brown taught me not to be "shy with the music and not to fear him. I learned that with a lot of hard work, mountains could be scaled.
Mr. Brown you have been in my heart and mind for many years. If it were not for you, I would not have gone to university which led me to getting into the corporate world. Mr. Brown your teaching inspired me to go to school and take up music. Now I am retired and looking back, many years back. I have such strong vivid remembrances of being in school and being in Mr. Brown's bands!! There is soo much more I could say but will leave it with my sincerest condolences to the Brown family!

Very sad to learn about Tom's passing, he would occasionally play with my dad's band. He was always pleasant when he would stop by the house. I ended up going to the Eastern US Music Camp one year...late 70's when it was held at Bard College. Sending the Brown family my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Grace,
I contacted Tom and you about a year or so ago. My intention was to head up to New York to visit with Tom in about a month or so while in Glenville on family matters. I was not aware he was ill or I would have made a point of visiting sooner.
Tom was my music/band teacher in the early to late 60s at BHBL. Music and Tom's firm giudance were responsible for me not ending up in jail or worse. It was a hard time for me as my family was devastated by a vicious divorce. Music and Tom's real life caring and guidance kept me sane and gave me hope. As I told him, he could never know what an impact he made on me or hundreds of kids growing up in turbulent times. His teaching of responsibility, hard work, and honesty has stayed with me through the military, college, and my career. The values he instilled in me I passed to my son and to my grandchildren. So, yes, Tom indeed lives on in his legacy. Thank you for sharing Tom with this kid in highschool as he set me and many on the right path through life.
God love you and give you peace.

Tom Brown is my favorite teacher of all time! In every season of my life and in many settings, I've shared with people how my life was transformed by "one very special high school band director, who taught me as much about life as he did about music." What a privilege and honor to have known a man as great as Tom Brown!

I am saddened by the death of Tom, well, Mr. Brown to me at the time of being his student. I just discovered his obituary tonight. I hope I may express to you the effect Tom had on my life, and I hope I have lived up to his standards. Tom did push for self-discipline, and provided an inspiration for a career in engineering and later, statistics.

I'm so sorry to hear of Mr. Brown's passing ... he was a huge influence on me from as early as 4th grade, when I first learned to play the clarinet. I was active in the music program at BHBL until I graduated in 1988. I also attended Mr. Brown's EUSMC at Cortland two different summers. Mr. B definitely set high standards and had great expectations for his students ... I'm a better person for having known him, and I'm grateful for all he taught me.

I met Mr. Thomas Brown when I was a freshman at Watervliet High School where he became music teacher. He was excellent teacher and music director for the High School band. The students including me quickly learned that he insisted on us being the best we could be and was quite a task-master. He provided opportunities for the students with lessons and assignments to practice daily with the instrument we were using and gave us music that was technically challenging. During band practice which we had several times a week, he insisted that each of us in the band do the best we could and stretch our technique. Many times this was difficult for me but I did learn to stretch and improve my music playing. My follow students also felt this and we all worked together to be excellent. During the band practices he often related his experiences with his own playing on Channel 6 TV, and with experiences with famous musicians such as Stan Kenton , Doc Severinson, et. al. He formed the Jazz band from some of the students. I could see this was a challenge for him as we were not that good at first, but he continued working with us to be better and we did so. During band concerts, he put in the extra effort to make the concerts memorable and professional to the audience such so as making use of stage lighting which changed during performance to suit the music, he provided music he composed for us to play, and extra equipment he brought in to enhance the concert. Being his student was very tough for me, but it was one of the great experiences in my life and I believe he helped me to strive for excellence and be successful in my endeavors which I will always remember. He was a truly a great person.
My condolences to his family for your loss of Tom Brown. I wish you all peace and the knowledge that he will be greatly missed. Sincerely, John Parslow

We have all lost one dedicated and driving force in the music world. Tom was a perfectionist in his performing skills and also in all of his musical endeavors. This is best exemplified by his 2 greatly talented children, his former outstanding students, his fine performing groups, his composition skills, etc., etc. When I think of Tom, I think of the great times we had going to the NYSSMA Conferences at the Concord Hotel in the Catskills. Being a fellow music educator with a major in percussion, we had many interests in common which helped to keep our friendship long lasting. My you now rest in peace my eternal friend -

Dear David and Kathy and Mrs Brown,
John Boucher had posted Tom's obituary on Facebook and I am so grateful to have seen it and to say to each of you what many have said. Your husband and father was a tremendous influence on me. More so about my appreciation for music and method and what it takes to be a master (hard work). He taught me to recognize the difference between "okay" and "wow". I hope that each of you find comfort and peace in how so many of us felt about his place in our lives. Sincerely- Jay Dunigan

Tom made me understand as a young music educator, that i needed to work hard to become better. He and I would talk on the phone as far back as 1973,he came and judged my band to help me.He also made me realize that you must be a musician and practice what you preach. One of my greatest memories is when he covered the piano book for my dance orchestra spectrum on vibes,he also played when we played for merv griffin at the desmond.americana.
As a young student in college we played in Italy and we walked with joyce and young kathy, the ruins of Pompei. The waiter came over with wine for all before our concert and tom sent it back. Our performance and any concert was important.
God Bless you and Thank You for what you taught me.

So sorry to hear of Tom's passing. I had the good fortune of working with Tom for 20 years at BH-BL high school. He was band, I was Chorus. We worked together on many Pops concerts. He was a task master, but his bands showed his hard work and dedication, winning State awards year after year. Although he was a man of few words outside the rehearsal hall, I found my talks about music with Tom to be enlightening. I even had the good fortune of singing with Tom's band on a few occasions. In the local music scene, and at BH-BL, Tom was a giant.
