Obituary of Leonard W. Lohne

Leonard W. Lohne, 92, of Coburg Village went home to be with his Lord on September 6, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. Born in New Haven. CT on March 21, 1924, he was the son of the late Martin S. and Helen Hansen Lohne. Len grew up in New Haven and graduated from Hillhouse High School there. After one year at Wheaton College (IL), he entered the Navy serving as carpenter's mate from '42-'45, receiving Asiatic-Pacific, American and European Theatre campaign ribbons, and The Victory Medal. Len returned to New Haven where he married the former Birgit Lundberg on March 29, 1947. The couple moved into a new house Len built for them. A few years later the Lohne's moved to Woodbridge, CT where they stayed nearly the rest of their lives. Len built many fine homes in the greater New Haven CT area. He was a licensed Realtor/Broker and proud area businessman. After retiring from home building at age 65 Len continued serving the community as the Police Commissioner of Woodbridge. He was elected to the Amity Regional school board where he served for 15 years, seven of which as the chairman. Len served on several town boards including tax appeals, ethics, and selectmen. He received commendations for his 37 years of volunteerism for the town. Len was a lifetime member of the Trinity Evangelical Free Church of Woodbridge, CT and served as a member of the church board of trustees. He coordinated the building of a new church in 1971 and its move from New Haven to Woodbridge. Len and Birgit were married over 69 years. Two years ago they moved from their beloved Woodbridge to The Coburg Village Community in Rexford, N.Y. Survivors include his wife, Birgit L. Lohne, children: Sandra Lohne Biggi (Ian), Peter Martin (Carol) Lohne, of Northville, NY, and Michael Arvid (Sally) Lohne of Prospect, CT. Grandchildren: Kristina (Frank) Hill, Amy (Steven) DiStefano, Kimberly (Myron) Smith, Jennifer (Andrew) Crabtree, Kara (Paul) Colevas, Katelyn (Fernando) Marreiros, Christine (Brandon) Parenteau and Meredith Rose Lohne. Len leaves behind his sister, Majorie McCausland of Swarthmore, PA, eighteen cherished great grandchildren, an adopted great granddaughter and her two sons, and several nieces and nephews. A service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 11 am at Coburg Village, One Coburg Village Way, Rexford, NY 12148.
