Obituary of Dorothy M. Getty

Dorothy M. Getty, 88, passed away peacefully September 10, 2016 at Glendale Nursing Facility. She was born in Schenectady on March 3, 1928, daughter of the late Irene and Wilfred Getty. Dorothy was predeceased by her brothers, Robert Getty of Niskayuna and Kenneth Getty of Wilmington, MA. She is survived by her sisters –in- law, Dorothy B. Getty and Bette P. Getty; also her nieces, Kathleen Getty, Amy Ricci and nephews Mark (Debbie) and late David (Lu) Getty, and three grand nieces. Also surviving is final caregiver and good friend, Dorothy Carpenter. Dot graduated from Nott Terrace High School and went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts Degree at the College of St. Rose and Masters at SUNY, Albany. She also earned extra hours giving her Certification for Department Chairmanship at the former Linton High School from 1968-1984, the year of her retirement. Dot started teaching school at Fonda High School, then at Scotia-Glenville Central Schools. She taught one year at the American High School on an Army Base in Manheim, Germany before returning to Scotia Glenville for one more year and then was hired as Department Chairperson of the Social Studies Department at Linton High School in Schenectady, NY and continued in that position until her retirement in 1984. During her teaching career, Dorothy was the recipient of many awards and fellowships, including a Fulbright Fellowship which gave her the opportunity to spend two months studying at the University at Poona, India, in 1961 and a year later was the recipient of the John Hays fellows program for a summer at the University of Oregon. She also did graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley plus was listed in “American Universities and Colleges” along with being presented with a membership in Delta Epsilon Sigma, a National Catholic Honor Society. She loved to travel and while in Germany, saw much of Europe and the Middle and Far East. After retiring she did a cruise to Hawaii, an Alpine tour, a week in Portugal plus several trips to the West coast along with many vacations in Cape Cod, MA and trips down along the east coast, including golfing in Jekyl Island, GA, Hilton Head, SC and Fort Meyers Beach, FL. Dot had taken up the game of golf after retirement and became quite proficient, belonging to three different golf leagues at the SAME TIME! She made many good and dear friends during those years as a league member and those friendships continued until her passing. Dot also did volunteer for several organizations; Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, City Mission, Schenectady’s St. Clare’s Hospital in its Pastoral Care and at the Information desk. Dot had been a Eucharistic Minister at the former Our Lady of Fatima Church on Rosa Rd. Unfortunately the dreaded Alzheimer’s disease became part of her life and she, though still quite “sharp” had to move to Beacon Pointe Memory Care Center where she resided until more recently Glendale. Dot requested memorial donations to the Schenectady Inner City Ministry of Schenectady, NY. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Wednesday (September 14) at 9:00 am at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Saratoga Rd. Glenville with Rev. Jerome Gingras officiating. There will be no prior calling times. Burial will be private at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna.
